As a lifelong comics enthusiast, I can confidently say that Joe Quesada’s career is nothing short of legendary. From his early days at Valiant to co-creating Azrael and launching Event Comics, this man has been a driving force in the industry for decades. His move to Marvel was a game-changer, and his work on titles like Daredevil and Spider-Man are still talked about today.
Joe Quesada, Marvel’s longtime editor and executive who recently started Amazing Comics, is teaming up with Zoop to develop and fund a comprehensive hardcover art book, as confirmed exclusively by ComicBook. This will mark Quesada’s initial foray into crowdfunding, with the campaign set to launch soon on the independent art platform, where artists like Jason Copland, Howard Chaykin, and Jim Starlin have previously initiated projects. Titled “Drawing the Line Somewhere“, the book will showcase high-resolution scans of Quesada’s black-and-white pencil and ink sketches, some process work, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into his raw artwork spanning four decades.
The launch page is now live, allowing fans to register for launch notifications, take advantage of early bird deals, and secure some exclusive, limited-time perks like autographs, sketch requests, and more unique items. Zoop anticipates that this campaign will be one of their most significant yet.
Known for his early fame in Valiant comics from the ’90s, Mike Quesada teamed up with Dennis O’Neil to introduce the character Azrael, initially in the miniseries “Batman: The Sword of Azrael.” Later in 1994, Quesada established Event Comics, an independent publishing company, where he collaborated with Jimmy Palmiotti on the creation of “Ash.”
Back in the day, I was quite fond of Event Comics, but its run was cut short. It wasn’t due to poor sales of Ash or any such thing. Instead, in 1998, Quesada and Palmiotti took over the Marvel Knights imprint at Marvel Comics. Soon enough, Quesada was promoted to editor-in-chief at Marvel, a position he held from 2000 until 2010. He continued to climb the ranks at Marvel, holding various upper-management roles until 2022.
As a devoted fan, I can attest that during his tenure at Marvel, Quesada consistently wielded his artistic talents, primarily focusing on cover designs. However, he truly shone when given the opportunity to contribute pencils for high-profile projects such as Kevin Smith’s run on Daredevil and the contentious Spider-Man story “One More Day.”
At Amazing Comics, Quesada is collaborating with Mad Cave Studios and the European publishing house Dupuis. Their debut comic book will be titled “Disciple“, a series co-written by Quesada and Charles Dorfman, featuring artwork by Quesada himself, colors by Richard Isanove, inked lines by Wade von Grawbadger, and lettering by Joe Caramagna.
Quesada additionally holds a first-look arrangement at Amazon Studios, where he’s working on multiple television productions alongside Pressman Films. Notably, he recently penned and directed his debut short film titled “Fly“. This year, expect the release of his new project, “Drawing the Line Somewhere “, with Zoop managing its printing and distribution.
