John Cena Will Entertain “Illusions” of Post-2025 Dream Matches, But Won’t End WWE Retirement

John Cena Will Entertain "Illusions" of Post-2025 Dream Matches, But Won't End WWE Retirement

As a lifelong WWE enthusiast who’s witnessed John Cena’s incredible journey since his debut, it’s bittersweet to hear that he’ll hang up the jorts and step into the sunset by 2025. It feels like a chapter in our shared storybook is closing, but I have faith that this isn’t truly goodbye, just another transition in the grand saga of John Cena.

John Cena is hanging up the jorts. During a surprise appearance at WWE Money in the Bank last month, Big Match John announced to the Toronto crowd that 2025 would mark his final year as an in-ring competitor, and he will be embarking on a year-long “farewell tour” to cap off his career. Cena has emphasized that when December 2025 rolls around, he is done as a wrestler but will continue to represent WWE as a proud ambassador, just trading the jean shorts and wristbands in for his signature three-piece suit. With this permanence known, wrestlers from across the industry have begun to campaign to match up with the 16-time world champion next year, including WWE Intercontinental Champion Bron Breakker and TNA star Joe Hendry.

John Cena Will Entertain Future Dream Matches

After 2025, John can expect plenty of enjoyable hypothetical scenarios, however, he won’t put on his athletic shoes for another game.

At the grand opening of Amazon Prime Video’s “Jackpot!” on the red carpet, John Cena shared with Extra his thoughts on potential rivals, stating that he finds the concept of his ideal opponents less appealing, but is intrigued by the idea of future contenders purely from a hypothetical standpoint.

John Cena shared his thoughts about WWE, saying, “What I love most about it is that the narrative never concludes, and it constantly expands in influence and appeal. Even when I retire, I’ll always wonder about potential matches with certain individuals. However, I don’t fixate on those ideas because they’re out of my hands. Instead, I work with the opponents assigned to me and strive to create the best story possible.”

In an exclusive chat with ComicBook, I (John Cena) highlighted my approach by saying that when it comes to choosing the opponents for my final tour, I’m letting the WWE management make the calls.

“I don’t have the power to choose who my opponents will be, it’s something I have no influence over,” Cena explained. “However, I guarantee that I will always give my utmost effort whenever the bell rings and each time I step onto the field. That’s a promise you can count on.”

Enthusiasts are brainstorming imaginative scenarios for Cena during his retirement tour, such as chasing after the record of 17 world titles or capturing the WWE Intercontinental Championship for the first time to achieve Grand Slam status.

Cena’s farewell tour kicks off in January 2025.
