As a long-time fan of Looney Tunes and a follower of Hollywood news, I’ve seen my fair share of projects that never quite made it to the big screen. The cancellation of John Cena’s “Coyote vs. Acme” is one such instance that leaves me feeling a mix of disappointment and understanding.
The world of Looney Tunes has seen a variety of unique cinematic adaptations, ranging from animation to live-action. One such adaptation was “Coyote vs. Acme,” a comedy movie starring actor and wrestler John Cena, which Warner Bros. had planned to produce. However, last year, it was reported that Warner Bros. Discovery would be abandoning the film entirely, a decision also made regarding movies like DC’s “Batgirl” and “Scooby-Doo: Scoob! Holiday Haunt.” In a recent interview with The Wrap, Cena expressed his regrets over the cancellation of “Coyote vs. Acme,” stating that he believes the film deserved an opportunity to connect with an audience.
Cena clarified, “There’s a lot to unpack here, as everyone’s perception varies. However, it’s important to note that we don’t actually own the film. The challenge in this industry is that, even though you put your heart and soul into a project, you can still feel a sense of ownership. Director Dave Green and the entire team created what we believed was a good movie.”
“I wish I could have watched it if given the opportunity,” Cena said. “However, I’m only one individual, so if it didn’t move forward, I would assume it was a wise business decision and for valid reasons. If the movie was shelved due to anything other than that, I would feel deep remorse and embarrassment when looking back on its legacy. Therefore, I must trust in the process. The movie means a lot to me, my feelings are deeply invested, but ultimately it’s someone else’s project and they have the final say.”
What Is Coyote vs. Acme About?
In the cartoon “Coyote vs. Acme“, after every device from ACME Corporation malfunctioned against Wile E. Coyote while he chased the Road Runner, he retains a human lawyer who also seems to have bad luck, to sue the company. When Wile E.’s attorney discovers that his previous law firm’s stern leader is the CEO of ACME, he collaborates with Wile E. to secure a victory in their court battle against him. The movie was inspired by the fictional The New Yorker article “Coyote v. Acme” written by Ian Frazier and published in 1990.
The principal actors of “Coyote vs. Acme” would have been Cena, Lana Condor, and Will Forte, under the guidance of director Dave Green. James Gunn, a co-CEO at DC Studios, was one of the producers, and contributed to the film’s story development.
Why Did Warner Bros. Want to Cancel Coyote vs. Acme?
Immediately following the announcement, Warner Bros. Discovery was aiming to claim a tax deduction for the film “Coyote vs. Acme,” much like their approach with DC’s “Batgirl” during the summer of 2022.
“Over the course of three years, I had the fortune to create a movie featuring Wile E. Coyote, an unyielding, passionate, and tenacious character like no other. My exceptional team and I dedicated countless hours to this project, determined to do justice to these timeless characters. The journey was marked by the support of test audiences who appreciated our efforts with high ratings. I am immensely proud of what we achieved, but deeply saddened by Warner Bros.’ decision. However, in true Wile E. Coyote spirit, let resilience and determination prevail.”
