In a matter of a few short months, movie enthusiasts can revisit the realm of John Wick with the upcoming spin-off titled Ballerina. The film will feature Ana de Armas in the leading role of both a dancer and an assassin.
However, although this development brings joy to followers, there remains a strong desire among them for updates on the fate of the primary series. Furthermore, they eagerly await confirmation about Keanu Reeves‘ character John Wick returning for another high-octane installment.
In March 2023, John Wick: Chapter 4, the fourth film in the series, was screened in UK theaters, marking Keanu Reeves’ return for what was presumed to be the last chapter of the primary action-packed storyline.
However, following its massive success at the box office, Lionsgate stated that another installment might still be possible, even though John’s predicament at the film’s end could prove challenging.
Joe Drake, from Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, stated through The Hollywood Reporter that the conclusion can be seen as having both a definite resolution and an open-ended interpretation.
As a cinephile, I’ll briefly pause here to ponder the possibility of a plausible entrance to scene number 5. However, it’s important to note that nothing is ever set in stone.

Will there be a John Wick 5?
Absolutely! It seems like quite a ride, but it looks like a sequel is being developed – as suggested by Lionsgate executive Jenefer Brown.
In her latest conversation with ComicBook.com, she clarified that they’re working on the fifth installment of John Wick. There’s a possibility that John Wick might be deceased now, and we’re all eagerly anticipating the revelation.
Indeed, it implies that at the conclusion of the fourth movie, the main character seems to be deceased – we might surmise they’ve discovered a solution or loophole to this predicament.
But it’s worth noting that Reeves himself has repeatedly suggested he might not be coming back.
In December, he said to CBS News, “I’ll never say never… My heart desires it, but my body is telling me no,” whereas recently, he informed Extra that “The character is deceased. He met his end in John Wick: Chapter 4.
He stated: “I understand, in Hollywood they often… I get it, it’s just like a typical Hollywood tale. At the moment, we don’t have [a strategy].” (or “plan”)
It seems plausible that Reeves might be acting nonchalant at the moment, given how hard it is for us to envision a John Wick movie without John Wick himself. All we can do is stay patient and find out in time.
Back in August 2020, I was thrilled when Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer announced that Chapter 5 would be filmed simultaneously with the fourth installment. However, production was paused in March 2021. Then, in 2023, director Chad Stahelski shared with The Hollywood Reporter that for now, Keanu and I have decided to take a break from John Wick. We’re giving our beloved character a well-deserved rest.
He commented: “I’m confident that the studio must have a strategy. If everyone adores it and it becomes a sensation, then we’ll have a brief pause.
Meanwhile, star Ian McShane had also previously said another chapter could be on the cards.
John Wick 5 potential release date
As of now, since the movie is still in its early stages, we don’t have any specific release date just yet. However, given the process, it seems like we’re probably looking at a wait of a couple more years before it hits the screens.
As soon as we get more definite information, we’ll make any necessary changes here. In the meantime, fans can eagerly anticipate the upcoming spin-off movie titled Ballerina, set to debut on June 6th, 2025. Remarkably, it will feature Keanu Reeves reprising his role as John Wick.
John Wick 5 cast
A John Wick movie wouldn’t feel right without Keanu Reeves playing the lead character, so it’s quite probable that a sequel hinges on him reappearing in the role. Additionally, we might expect franchise veterans Ian McShane and Laurence Fishburne to return as Winston and the Bowery King respectively.
In a possible turn of events, Rina Sawayama could reappear as Akira, following the hint dropped during the post-credits scene of John Wick 4 suggesting she’s embarking on a quest for her father Koji’s vengeance. Meanwhile, Ana de Armas might become part of the main storyline by portraying Rooney, having played this role in the previously mentioned spin-off.

It’s still uncertain what might transpire in a hypothetical John Wick 5, but if there is another sequel, it would likely start by detailing how John Wick survived the events at the end of Chapter 4 and unveiling his actions following his supposed demise.
From the post-credits scene in John Wick 4, it appears that Rina Sawayama’s character Akira could play a significant role. It’s possible that she might uncover John’s whereabouts, enabling her to carry on the quest for revenge over her father’s death. This could potentially pull John out of retirement once more.
