John Wick 5 May Be Less of a Sure Thing Than Fans Thought (& That Might Be a Good Thing)

Although the production of John Wick 5 is underway, director Chad Stahelski has hinted that the film may not materialize if he can’t find a compelling story to tell. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stahelski expressed concerns about the future of the successful action series. At present, he’s collaborating on a script with writer Mike Finch; however, he admitted that concluding John Wick: Chapter 4 leaves him with a challenging obstacle to surmount. Stahelski’s aim is to create a narrative that’s fulfilling, but if he can’t achieve this, he might abandon John Wick 5 and instead utilize those ideas for an entirely new project.

will it be fulfilling? We are indeed working on it diligently. It’s just a matter of whether we can make it as satisfying as everyone hopes.

Stahelski hinted that a fifth John Wick movie isn’t automatically in the works. He explained, “If we venture down the path of John Wick 5 and develop this story, only to find it doesn’t fit right, there may be other ideas we’ll uncover that we can apply to other projects instead.” Stahelski also mentioned that Lionsgate is eager to bring John Wick 5 into being, and he’s going to explore ways to make the movie possible.

As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled to share that I was there when Lionsgate unveiled “John Wick 5” during their CinemaCon panel in April! This exciting news brings back the dynamic duo of Chad Stahelski and franchise star Keanu Reeves. Although the specifics of the plot remain secret, Stahelski hinted that the story will venture beyond the High Table conflict we’ve seen in the previous four “John Wick” films. The announcement of “John Wick 5” took many by surprise, given that John met his end at the close of the fourth movie. Before this revelation, Reeves had been rather ambiguous about returning to the role since John was supposedly deceased.

For now, the John Wick series is growing with spin-off films. This weekend marks the premiere of “From the John Wick Universe: Ballerina“, featuring Ana de Armas. Since this movie takes place between “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” and “John Wick 5“, Reeves has reprised a minor role. Additionally, another film titled “Caine“, directed by and starring Donnie Yen, is in development. Yen will reappear as his character from “John Wick 5“.

It’s heartening that director Chad Stahelski isn’t simply continuing the John Wick saga without a plan. While fake deaths in films are common, John Wick 4 seemed like a fitting conclusion to John’s story as he found tranquility and freedom from the High Table’s demands. Reversing this could lessen the impact of John Wick 4. Though the idea of John Wick 5 featuring the Baba Yaga battling new adversaries is intriguing, it must be executed carefully to maintain continuity. Since Winston and the Bowery King paid a visit to John’s grave at the end of John Wick 4, Stahelski will need to think outside the box to work around this closure.

It’s not hard to see why Lionsgate would be keen on another John Wick movie. Each sequel has outperformed its predecessor at the box office, with John Wick 4 raking in an impressive $440.1 million worldwide. Given this trend, a fifth mainline installment seems like a smart move. However, the John Wick franchise also enjoys a strong critical reputation, so it would be disappointing if John Wick 5 failed to meet expectations. With Chad Stahelski deeply committed to the series, he won’t proceed with John Wick 5 unless he believes it can match the exceptional quality of the earlier films, as it should be. If Ballerina, a spinoff, does well, it could be a way to keep the John Wick universe alive.
