John Wick 5’s Arrival Spells Trouble for Ghost of Tsushima Movie Plans!

The news is confirmed: John Wick Chapter 5 is under development, with Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski set to reprise their roles. Unfortunately, this development might signal a delay or potential cancelation for the long-awaited Ghost of Tsushima film project. Over the past decade, the realm of video game adaptations has seen significant growth, as evidenced by successful films like The Last of Us, Fallout, and the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie. These productions have managed to preserve the essence of their source material, earning widespread acclaim.

A highly anticipated movie adaption based on the video game “Ghost of Tsushima” is in development by PlayStation Productions. This is one of the latest franchises from PlayStation, with a sequel titled “Ghost of Yotei” set for release this year exclusively on PS5. Given the game’s cinematic quality, a film adaptation seemed inevitable. The director chosen for the project was Chad Stahelski, known for his work on the John Wick series, in early 2021. This decision was wise due to Stahelski’s expertise in action direction and ability to create visually stunning scenes even amidst violent and bloody battles. However, updates about Ghost of Tsushima were semi-regular throughout 2020, but there was a hitch. Stahelski was also working on a Highlander reboot with Henry Cavill, causing him to decide which project he would tackle first.

Ghost of Tsushima Movie May Be In Doubt After John Wick 5 Announcement

Starting from late 2023, Highlander is expected to progress into production, but no significant updates have been shared so far. Additionally, Chad Stahelski, the director, is reportedly working on a Rainbow Six film and there are whispers about him directing Marvel’s Blade. More importantly, he has agreed to helm John Wick: Chapter 5, which was recently announced at CinemaCon. Although this news is thrilling, it might dampen our hopes for the Ghost of Tsushima movie since Stahelski’s schedule seems to be filled with high-profile projects. Given that John Wick: Chapter 5 appears to be his top priority and a story has apparently been devised, but a script is yet to be finalized, it seems we might have to wait a couple of years for its release.

Is Sony considering waiting for Stahelski to finish John Wick 5 before starting work on the Ghost of Tsushima movie? Given his current commitments, it seems difficult to imagine. Even if Sony chooses to wait, the Ghost of Tsushima film could potentially release as late as 2028 or 2029. Assuming the script for John Wick 5 is finalized this year, production starts next year, and the movie hits theaters in 2027, it would require a swift transition to begin work on Ghost of Tsushima.

It’s fortunate that the game “Ghost of Tsushima” once had a script, and possibly more than one. In 2022, a writer was brought on board for the film adaptation. Since then, it’s possible that other writers have contributed to the project as well. This could speed up the process for director Chad Stahelski. However, it appears another director might take over the “Ghost of Tsushima” movie, which is a bit disheartening. There are skilled action directors like Gareth Evans who could potentially excel in this role, but the final decision is yet to be made. Regardless, it seems that the “Ghost of Tsushima” film may still be years away from release.

If anyone other than Chad Stahelski isn’t the right choice for directing “Ghost of Tsushima”, who could it possibly be? Share your thoughts below!
