As a seasoned film enthusiast with over two decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that the upcoming film “Ballerina” has piqued my interest like no other. Having grown up on action-packed films and ballet performances alike, this blend of high-octane combat sequences and graceful dance movements strikes a chord with me. The casting choice of Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro seems spot-on, given her impressive acting chops demonstrated in films such as “Knock Knock” and her impending reunion with Keanu Reeves.
At the massive CCXP event held in São Paulo, Brazil this weekend, Lionsgate delighted fans of the John Wick universe by unveiling a fresh sneak peek for the upcoming film, Ballerina. Initially hinted at in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, where a Ruska Roma-trained ballerina is suggested, the movie centers around Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro, a ballet dancer who doubles as an expert assassin seeking vengeance for her murdered family. Recognizing that a classically trained dancer with no acting background wouldn’t suffice for this storyline, the John Wick team is showcasing her combat skills and grueling training in the new featurette.
In the initial trailer unveiled earlier this year, the film titled “Ballerina” is depicted as unfolding events occurring in the chronology of “John Wick“, positioned between “John Wick: Parabellum” and the upcoming “John Wick: Chapter 4“. Keanu Reeves Comes Face to Face with Ana de Armas in Ballerina
At first, the plan was for the project to come out this year, but it got delayed by almost a full year due to the requirement for additional filming. This development caused some worry among fans as such delays are often not favorable. However, Ana de Armas alleviated these worries in an interview with Collider, stating, “Everything we did during those reshoots was essential. We got fantastic footage. It’s truly magnificent.
The actress famed for her blonde tresses is teaming up with Keanu Reeves once more, following their last collaboration in 2015’s “Knock Knock”. This time, it’s for the movie titled “Ballerina”, where Ian McShane reprises his role as Winston. Furthermore, Norman Reedus, Anjelica Huston, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Gabriel Byrne, and the late Lance Reddick are also part of the star-studded cast. The production company for this film is Thunder Road Films / 87Eleven Entertainment, with Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and Chad Stahelski overseeing it.
In addition to the “Ballerina” project, the universe of “John Wick,” created by Reeves, is growing with a new venture – an anime series. This upcoming show will serve as a prequel, aiming to address questions that fans have been curious about since the beginning. Despite the ending of “John Wick: Chapter 4,” which showed Wick’s body being buried, there has been a strong demand among fans for another film.
Chad Stahelski, director and co-creator of the John Wick films, discussed the possibility of a fifth movie, but they are worried about damaging the franchise’s integrity. Last year, a miniseries called The Continental debuted on Peacock, which focused on a young character named Winston played by Colin Woodell. This series received heavy criticism from Michael McShane, who plays the original Winston in the John Wick movies.
Ballerina hits theaters on June 6th, 2025.
