It’s possible that Donnie Yen could switch from using a white cane to sitting behind a director’s chair in the future. This transition might happen while he continues to portray the enigmatic blind assassin Caine in the growing John Wick universe. Following his highly praised performance in John Wick: Chapter 4, the martial arts master is reportedly discussing the possibility of starring in and directing a spinoff focused on his character. If Yen takes up the director’s role, it could mark an exciting development for the series as he brings his extensive experience in action filmmaking to the table, offering a more in-depth exploration of the assassins’ world through the lens of his intriguing character.
The film is progressing, as the martial arts icon recently disclosed to ComingSoon.net, “We’re in the planning phase. I just finished another interview. Initially, I wasn’t meant to reveal this, but he mentioned he had spoken with Chad [Stahelski], and Chad divulged some information. So, it seems I can share a bit now. We are in the development stage, and we’ll see what unfolds. I trust the timing and destiny, and they want to move forward with it. I’m ready for it.
Speaking separately to Collider, Yen acknowledged discussions about taking the helm as director.
He agreed, “It’s accurate to say this is a possibility. Both the fans and the studio seem eager for it, but I can’t provide any definite answers. All I can tell you is that there are discussions taking place, and they’re quite in-depth. Time will tell what comes of these talks.
While plot details remain under wraps, Yen hints at early creative developments.
I need to expand upon it more. I’ve got a few concepts brewing for the storyline, but we’ll have to wait and see. I prefer not to reveal too much yet as I’m unsure if I can disclose that information just yet. However, they’ve been quite insistent and enthusiastic about me leading this project.
The seasoned performer, recognized for his outstanding role in “John Wick: Chapter 4,” showed equal excitement and wariness regarding the weight of the task at hand.
He clarified that while he feels both accountability and apprehension about not disappointing the franchise, his aim is to contribute something new and exciting to it. He’s cautious about not setting unrealistic expectations among the fans.
Known primarily for his acting roles, Yen also boasts an impressive directorial background, having directed movies such as “Legend of the Wolf”, “Shanghai Affairs” and most recently, “The Prosecutor”. About his latest directing project, Yen shared with Collider that the $25 million thriller offers him a good opportunity to demonstrate his directorial skills and hints at his potential as a filmmaker.
The actor-director expressed his strong desire for Chad Stahelski, the director of John Wick, to continue playing a role.
Yen exclaimed, “I certainly hope he’ll show up! I want this to be an absolutely fantastic event, one that will delight both our fans and the wider audience. In fact, my aim is to create something that won’t fall short of expectations.
In May 2024, it was announced that a new spinoff from “John Wick,” titled the Caine spinoff, has been added to the growing parts of this action-packed universe. This announcement follows other upcoming projects like “Ballerina” starring Ana de Armas, where Keanu Reeves makes a special appearance. Interestingly, Keanu Reeves himself has hinted that he might not return for a fifth main installment due to his knees causing him some trouble, as he mentioned in an interview with CBS News.
