JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s Live Action Movie Soundtrack Was Almost Made Entirely By AI

The recently released live-action series titled “Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan: Confessional” has caused quite a stir in Japan as it marks another screen appearance of the popular anime, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. However, the latest news about this production has been causing an uproar due to an unexpected twist. In a surprising interview, the film’s composer, Naruyoshi Kikuchi, disclosed that almost all new music in the live-action Rohan film was produced using artificial intelligence. Given the ongoing debate around AI in the entertainment industry, this revelation is bound to spark discussions among Joestar fans for a considerable period.

In a precedent-setting move for global entertainment films, Kikuchi, who has dabbled with AI in the past, such as in the JoJo film Rohan At The Louvre, where “A Horror Film” and “Simultaneous Performance of Two String Quartets” were AI-generated tracks, has recently announced that the entire soundtrack for the latest film is composed by an artificial intelligence. In a post on Naruyoshi Kikuchi’s social media account, it was stated that not only are all songs AI-composed (unlike previous works where AI was used sparingly or alongside pre-existing tunes), but the SHIN-ON-GAK Production Studio has poured all their efforts into creating ominously solemn compositions for this project. Fans are encouraged to eagerly anticipate its release!

Rohan’s Composer Discusses The Process

In a pamphlet accompanying the theatrical release of the latest Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan live-action film, Naruyoshi Kikuchi talked about AI in the production but didn’t touch on the initial controversy. The composer explained, “The storyline of Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan aligns with the growth of SHIN-ON-GAK Production Studio, a group I founded, and mirrors the fast pace of development in generative AI. For instance, in Episode 8 of Season 3 of the TV series, “Rock-Paper-Scissors Kid,” an entire track was already computer-generated by AI. Today’s advanced AI technology allows for music creation that sounds as if it were played and sung by humans, encompassing a variety of genres from orchestral pieces to ethnic tunes, as well as soundtracks featuring vocals.

Kikuchi boldly claimed that by merely typing “orchestra” into an AI, he managed to generate some of the music for a project. He didn’t reveal the visuals to his studio team, instead, he told them it was a piece called “Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan: At a Confessional” and that it was filmed entirely in Venice. Over three days, approximately 50 tracks were produced. It might seem surprising, but even without vivid descriptions, music can still be generated in a workable condition. In fact, having some inconsistency can sometimes yield better results. If you enter “orchestra” into the AI, it will create a fitting piece that could play during the climax of a movie where two lovers embrace. By withholding specific details and keeping information minimal, Kikuchi selected tracks that appeared usable and gave them to Director Kazutaka Watanabe for use in their production.

Kikuchi Responds To Controversy

On May 25th, Rohan the composer took to social media to justify his work and the integration of AI in the live-action anime adaptation. He acknowledged that some people criticize the use of AI due to a lack of understanding, assuming it was used out of laziness. He expressed that in today’s anxious world, people tend to engage in witch hunts as a means to alleviate their fear. However, Rohan found this behavior intriguing and even exciting. Thus, he remains committed to live performances, compositions, the exploration of music theory, and the investigation of music technology, including AI.

Previously, Hirohiko Araki, the creator of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, has openly expressed his skepticism towards artificial intelligence. Although he encourages the use of digital tools to aid artists in their work, he harbors concerns about potential misuse, fearing that unscrupulous individuals might take advantage of such methods. At the time this article was written, Araki has yet to express any opinion on the contentious music selection.
