Joker 2 Box Office Milestone: Folie à Deux Crosses $200 Million Globally After Four Weeks

As a lifelong comic book fan who has seen it all, from the darkest Batman tales to the brightest Superman adventures, I must say that my expectations for Joker: Folie à Deux were sky-high, given the phenomenal success of its predecessor. However, this sequel left me feeling more like a jester than a king.

The musical sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux,” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, is winding down its run at cinemas. After four weeks in theaters, it surpassed $200 million at the global box office this weekend. In the U.S., “Joker 2” earned an additional $600,000, bringing its domestic total to $57.8 million and a worldwide total of $201.1 million. This represents a decrease of approximately 72% from its third weekend earnings of $2.1 million, when the Warner Bros. production saw a reduction in theater count from 4,102 screens to 2,857 screens.

Speaking comparatively, the other R-rated comic book film of this year, Marvel Studios’ “Deadpool and Wolverine,” generated a staggering $211.4 million domestically during its opening weekend. This figure surpassed the entire lifetime box office earnings of “Joker 2” in mere three days.

This weekend, another underwhelming sequel based on a comic book, titled “Venom: The Last Dance“, graced the big screen and became number one at the box office with an estimated earning of $51 million. This is a series low opening, falling short of “Black Adam“, which also underperformed when it debuted with $67 million during this same weekend in 2022.

In its second week, “Joker 2” ranked 11th at the box office and earned less than Neon’s film “Anora” ($867,000) and the LEGO-animated Pharrell Williams biopic “Piece by Piece” ($720,000), currently in its third weekend. Interestingly, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which has surpassed “Joker 2” despite being in theaters for twice as long, collected an additional $3.2 million, bringing its domestic total to $288.7 million after 52 days. Sony’s “Venom 3” took the top spot, pushing Paramount’s “Smile 2” to second place with $9.4 million, while Focus’ new film “Conclave” debuted in third place with $6.5 million.

The reason for the poor performance of “Joker 2” at the box office can be attributed to its high production costs, which totaled approximately $190 million, not including an additional $100 million in marketing and distribution expenses. To break even, it needed to earn at least $450 million. In contrast, the original “Joker” film earned over $1 billion worldwide on a budget of about $70 million. However, the sequel failed to reach such numbers due to unfavorable reviews from both critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently stands at 32% freshness, while CinemaScore polled opening night moviegoers who gave it the lowest grade ever for a comic book movie.

The movie “Joker: Folie à Deux” will be ready for home viewing around Halloween and is set to premiere on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on December 17th.
