Joker 2 Box Office Opening Lower Than Morbius and The Marvels

As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast who has seen his fair share of cinematic triumphs and disappointments, I must admit that the underperformance of “Joker: Folie à Deux” is a bit disheartening. Having witnessed the original Joker shatter box office records and leave audiences spellbound, it’s hard not to feel a pang of nostalgia seeing its sequel struggle to find its footing.

In a surprising turn of events, Todd Phillips’ latest film “Joker: Madness Duo” has been met with disappointing earnings, raking in around $40 million domestically this weekend. However, box office analyst Charlie Jatinder estimates that the actual figures might be closer to $37.5 million. In contrast, the 2019 “Joker” film earned $39.3 million on its opening Friday and went on to make a staggering $96 million, setting a record for the largest October opening of all time during the same period five years ago.

Originally, it was anticipated that the release of Joker 2 would earn over $70 million. However, due to negative reviews from critics and harmful buzz among audiences, this figure dropped significantly, landing anywhere between $50 million and $60 million. This underperformance places the movie’s box office earnings in the same ballpark as disappointing films like The Marvels ($46 million) and The Flash ($55 million).

If “Joker 2” earns less than $40 million during its first weekend, it would trail behind the Jared Leto-led movie “Morbius,” which was a flop in two ways and managed only $39 million on its opening weekend, eventually grossing a modest $162 million worldwide.

In a blend of jukebox musical and courtroom drama, the anticipated release of Joker 2 has been labeled as “crashing and burning” by Gitesh Pandya, the founder and editor of Box Office Guru. On Twitter, he expressed that the opening weekend box office will still secure the top spot, but surpassing $40 million is now doubtful, placing it below the territories of both The Marvels and Morbius. This projection suggests a final domestic earnings of approximately $70 million, significantly lower than the original’s $335 million, which became the first R-rated film to surpass the $1 billion mark.
