As a seasoned gamer and film enthusiast with a soft spot for the darker corners of the DC universe, I must say that the news about Joaquin Phoenix‘s character Arthur Fleck taking to the stage in ‘Joker: Folie A Deux’ has me both intrigued and skeptical.
Joaquin Phoenix, who played the Joker in the film “Folie A Deux,” shared some words of wisdom that Lady Gaga gave him regarding singing during the production. He opened up about the upcoming comic book sequel to Empire Magazine. In the original “Joker” movie, Arthur Fleck was not a professional performer. However, Phoenix is significantly pushing his boundaries in this follow-up. The actor stated, “Gaga was always very encouraging, saying ‘Just go with what you feel, it’s okay.’ For someone who isn’t used to performing like that, it can be uncomfortable, but also exhilarating.” With her support likely playing a significant role, considering Phoenix is not classically trained as a singer. Additionally, one of the standout aspects of the first “Joker” movie was its realistic narrative tone.
It could be surprising if Arthur suddenly transformed into a Broadway-style vocalist out of nowhere. Phoenix humorously commented, “It seems I caused Gaga to choke on her coffee the first time I sang, which was refreshing, thrilling, and boosted my confidence.”
In his words, it was crucial to preserve its rough melodies and occasional off-key moments. Arthur, who spent his childhood listening to these tunes on the radio, isn’t meant to be a polished singer. Instead, he should embody an everyday person, one who might suddenly break into song while showering.
Joker Is Not Changing Too Much For The Sequel
As a die-hard fan, maintaining the same captivating atmosphere established in the initial Joker film was crucial for director Todd Phillips during the production of Joker: Folie A Deux. In an interview with Empire prior to San Diego Comic-Con’s conclusion, he emphasized the importance of keeping Arthur in that same vein as the original movie. Over time, we all know the Joker becomes a significant pain in Batman’s life, but it seems unlikely that Phillips will choose to escalate him into a criminal mastermind for this sequel. Instead, he aims to keep his version of the villain grounded and relatable, focusing on Arthur’s character development rather than making him a cunning mastermind right away. As Phillips previously clarified, “We would never do that because Arthur clearly is not a criminal mastermind. He was never that.”
“I found myself unintentionally embodying a symbol for many,” Phillips noted. “It seems I’m bearing the consequences of the first film’s transgressions, yet surprisingly, I stumbled upon something I’d yearned for all along – genuine affection. Despite being tossed around in various directions, love has always been my heart’s desire. So we aimed to present a version of me that was as untainted and sincere as possible.”
