Joker 2: Release date, cast, title, trailer and more

As a film critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of sequels that failed to live up to their predecessors. But every once in a while, there comes a project that truly excites me, and Joker: Folie À Deux is one of them.

Excitement grows as the anticipated follow-up to Joker, titled Joker: Folie à Deux, unveils a fresh trailer for viewers.

The trailer provides a greater understanding of the movie by revealing more about Joaquin Phoenix’s character, Arthur Fleck, who seems to be facing consequences for his past actions, as depicted in the initial film.

As a huge fan of both Phoenix and Lady Gaga, I’m absolutely thrilled to hear that they will be joining forces for the upcoming project. Lady Gaga’s announcement of her portrayal of Harley Quinn, whom she referred to as Lee, has added an extra layer of excitement to this collaboration. Having followed Lady Gaga’s career closely and being deeply moved by her powerful performances, I have no doubt that she will bring a unique and captivating energy to the role. Her life experiences, both as a renowned artist and an actress, make her an ideal candidate to embody Harley Quinn’s complexity and depth. With Phoenix’s proven acting abilities and Lady Gaga’s raw talent, this duo is bound to create something truly extraordinary. I can’t wait to witness their collaboration unfold on the silver screen!

In an interview with Access Hollywood, she shared, “Lee holds a special place in my heart. She’s genuinely kind and vulnerable. My portrayal of Harley in this film is deeply personal and true to the story’s characters.”

As a film enthusiast who has attended numerous screenings, both in the comfort of my own home and in the grandeur of a movie theater, I wholeheartedly believe that some films are best savored in their intended environment. The movie I’m referring to is one such experience – it’s a visual and auditory feast that is truly worth the wait for an audience in a cinema setting.

At first, some people were taken aback by the news that Gaga would be cast in this role. However, once fans discovered that her part was drawing inspiration from an unconventional source – film musicals – everything fell into place.

According to director Todd Phillips, the film “Folie à Deux” places great importance on music and contains at least fifteen song renditions as reported by Variety.

In the latest preview, Arthur starts singing “For Once in My Life” by Stevie Wonder at the beginning. Later on, he and Harley join forces to sing “Get Happy,” a well-known tune originally performed by Judy Garland.

Here’s everything we know about Joker: Folie à Deux.

Joker 2 release date

The movie “Joker: Folie à Deux” is set to hit theaters on October 4, 2024 – that’s only a few more months to go! Rest assured, it will be well worth the wait.

Five years after the initial Joker movie’s debut, the new installment is unveiled. It’s worth noting that there’s a strong chance this sequel may repeat the success of its predecessor by securing a high-profile festival premiere. Given that Joker shocked everyone by clinching the coveted Golden Lion at the 2019 Venice Film Festival, could director Todd Phillips pull off another victory?

The title of the film was set as early as June 2022. It originates from a French phrase that signifies “folly of two,” representing a mental disorder that affects two individuals with deep connections. This can be likened to the Joker and Harley Quinn.

Who is in the cast of Joker 2?

The cast members confirmed for Joker: Folie à Deux are the following.

  • Joaquin Phoenix as Joker/Arthur Fleck
  • Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn/Harleen Quinzel
  • Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond
  • Harry Lawtey as Harvey Dent
  • Catherine Keener as TBC
  • Jacob Lofland as TBC
  • Brendan Gleeson as TBC
  • Steve Coogan as TBC
  • Ken Leung as TBC

Phoenix will be returning once again for his role as the Joker/Arthur Fleck.

In 2019, the actor delivered an exceptional performance as the distressed DC villain, earning him the prestigious Oscar for Best Actor due to his compelling portrayal.

Currently, Lady Gaga is set to portray Harley Quinn, Joker’s famed love interest, in the upcoming film. This decision raises the question of whether Phillips will stick to the original Harley Quinn character from DC comics or deviate from it, as opposed to following Margot Robbie’s portrayal in Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey productions.

In addition, actress Zazie Beetz is also making a comeback as Sophie Dumond.

At the same time, Harry Lawtey from “Industry” has been added to the Joker 2 cast. He will portray the character of Harvey Dent based on the information disclosed in the movie’s second preview.

Catherine Keener (from “Get Out”), Jacob Lofland (“Maze Runner”), Brendan Gleeson (“The Banshees of Inisherin” actor), Steve Coogan (known for “Alan Partridge”), and Ken Leung (“Lost” cast member) are set to join the ensemble, although specifics about their characters or roles remain undivulged.

Previously, Coogan discussed some aspects of his character, sharing that “I engage in an intriguing interaction with Joaquin Phoenix. I portray a CNN-like journalist who interrogates him in his cell.”

There’s a slim chance Robert De Niro and Frances Conroy won’t reprise their roles as Murray and Penny in the next film since they were deceased in the first one. However, it’s not impossible we might see a few flashbacks featuring them.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been keeping an eye on the upcoming production, but it seems that Willem Dafoe, who had earlier expressed his desire to join the cast, might not make an appearance after all.

In 2022, he shared with GQ an intriguing notion: “What if there existed a fake Joker? This means it’s conceivable for there not to be two Jokers dueling each other, but rather one individual pretending to be the Joker without actually being him.”

As a seasoned storyteller with a rich imagination, I’ve often found myself pondering over intriguing what-ifs and potential storylines. One such idea that has captivated me lately is the notion of exploring a character inspired by Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of the Joker in films. Picture this: what if there was another individual who adopted similar mannerisms or tactics, creating an entirely new and unique take on the iconic villain?

What could happen in Joker 2?

*Warning: There are spoilers for Joker ahead.*

The film’s official summary is out, offering a sneak peek into its plot without revealing too much detail.

As a movie enthusiast with a deep appreciation for character-driven narratives, I find the synopsis of “Joker: Folie À Deux” particularly intriguing. Having seen Joaquin Phoenix’s breathtaking portrayal of Arthur Fleck in the first installment, I’m eager to delve deeper into his story.

Previously, it was understood that the movie would unfold as a dark and complex tale of romance between Arthur Fleck and Harley Quinn, who crossed paths during their time at Arkham Asylum.

By the finale of Joker, Arthur Fleck had completely transformed into the evil mastermind version of Batman’s infamous nemesis, leaving a destructive path in Gotham City after his humiliating interview on Murray Franklin’s popular talk show.

At the close of the movie, Arthur was seen being wheeled out of Arkham State Hospital, having abruptly left his therapy session, trailing bloodstains behind him.

Absolutely, it’s well-established that the Joker, initially known as Arthur, becomes Batman’s most formidable adversary. Therefore, there’s plenty of room to delve deeper into his backstory and wicked deeds.

In the film “Joker,” Bruce Wayne made a brief appearance during childhood scenes, intentionally drawing attention away from the central character, Arthur Fleck, and his transformation into the Joker. A potential follow-up could introduce a new adversary for the developed version of Fleck.

Another fascinating element is the use of music in the film. This layer only adds to the movie’s allure, making it a must-watch experience. Keep an eye out for any new plot developments; we’ll share them as soon as we learn more.

Is there a trailer for the Joker sequel?

As a film enthusiast who has been following the latest trends and releases in the industry for years, I can confidently say that the first trailer drop for the upcoming film in April 2024 was an exciting moment for me. And based on the massive viewership it garnered within just 24 hours – a staggering 167 million views – I’d wager that this production is poised to be another major success story. The anticipation and hype surrounding this film are palpable, and as someone who has seen the impact of successful movies on both the entertainment landscape and people’s lives, I can’t wait to see what this one brings to the table.

Below, you can view the trailer that offers an intriguing peek into Arthur and Harley’s distorted romance and the film’s musical aspect.

A second trailer was then released in July 2024, which you can watch here:

Joker: Folie à Deux will be released in UK cinemas on 4th October 2024.
