Joker 2 Rotten Tomatoes Score Reviews: "I Wanted a Joker Movie, Not a Musical"

“As a gamer who’s seen his fair share of sequels, I can confidently say that Joker: Folie ? Deux seems to have missed the mark for many fans, much like how Nintendo often stumbles when trying to recreate the magic of Super Mario Bros 2. The mix of musical elements and the departure from the gritty, dark tone of the original Joker has left quite a few disappointed, akin to finding an unopened copy of E.T. for the Atari in your Christmas stocking instead of the much-anticipated Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.

Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker expresses a feeling that they might not be satisfying the audience during a Sonny & Cher-style variety show in “Joker: Madness Duet.” Early reviews leaked online on Wednesday, a day before the film’s U.S. release, suggest that the sequel isn’t hitting the mark with fans. Following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September, which received mixed critical reception, “Joker 2” is receiving similar feedback from audiences following their first advanced screenings on Monday evening.

The sequel to “Joker,” titled Joker 2, currently holds a 53% approval rating among professional critics on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 74 reviews. Given that it’s currently labeled as “rotten” and falls significantly short of the original 2019 “Joker’s” 69% fresh score, it seems unlikely to match or surpass its predecessor’s impressive box office earnings ($1 billion) and Oscar nominations (11, with 2 wins for Best Actor and Best Original Score). Rotten Tomatoes has yet to release the Popcornmeter score, a rating system that rewards highly rated audience favorites with a “Verified Hot” badge.

“I wanted a Joker movie and not a musical,” reads a verified audience review rating the movie 1.5 stars out of 5 and adding that the ending is “completely disappointing.” Reads a one star review from user Odysseus 9, “It’s more [of] a musical than a movie. If you enjoyed the first movie, then you shouldn’t watch this one.” Jovan J agreed the musical sequences were excessive, writing in a 1.5 star review: “This is not what I expected this movie to be. With Lady Gaga this movie became a musical.”

User Stefan G, awarding the movie 4 stars, praised Phoenix and Gaga, but criticized an “anticlimactic” ending. “The musical elements work for me very well and I am not at all a fan of musicals,” the review reads. Gabriel S, giving a five-star rating, writes that “Gaga and Joaquin shine as The Joker and Harley Quinn.”

Despite Phoenix and Gaga’s performances, there is a consensus that Joker 2 is largely uneventful, with reactions ranging from “tedious” to “pointless, boring, grim, pretentious and extremely stupid.” “Pointless sequel that takes away from the original,” reads a 1.5 star review from Bill S. “I don’t know how you take a movie that made a billion dollars and make a sequel that fans of the first film will hate.”

In simpler terms, according to Jithin K’s two-star review, Folie à Deux is described as an “unconventional movie”. He praises Phoenix and Gaga for their performances in the film they were provided with. Christopher T refers to it as a “beautifully filmed middle finger towards fans”, while Mike T, in his half-star review, advises that if you’re a fan of The Joker, Harley Quinn, DC, or comic books, it might be best to avoid this film.

In the film “Folie à Deux,” Joaquin Phoenix portrays Arthur Fleck while Lady Gaga takes on the role of Harleen “Lee” Quinzel. Brendan Gleeson is Jackie Sullivan, Catherine Keener plays Maryanne Stewart, Zazie Beetz becomes Sophie Dumond, Steve Coogan appears as Paddy Meyers, and Harry Lawtey portrays Harvey Dent. (Notably, Gleeson stars in “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Keener was in “Get Out,” Beetz is from “Deadpool 2,” Coogan is known for the “Alan Partridge” comedies, and Lawtey appears in “The Pale Blue Eye.”)
