Joker: Folie à Deux Director Makes Unexpected Claim About His DC Future

As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of comic book adaptations over the years, I must say I’ve been both captivated and disheartened by the recent developments surrounding “Joker: Folie ? Deux.

As a devoted fan, it seems that the follow-up to the 2019 blockbuster Joker titled “Folie à Deux” is now gracing our screens, but it appears Todd Phillips’ tenure within the DC Universe might be nearing its end. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he hinted at moving on from DC productions. Previously, he expressed no interest in creating a third Joker film and feels that a potential Joker 2 wouldn’t lead to a standalone movie for Lady Gaga’s Harleen “Lee” Quinzel character.

Phillips stated, “I’m unsure about the direction of another movie featuring Lee, to be honest.” He added that his involvement in the DC Universe ended with the two films he directed.

It’s worth noting that Phillips has previously stated he had no intention of creating further Joker or related films. As far back as 2019, he declared there were no sequel plans and that the original film wasn’t intended to have one. However, contrary to these past statements, a follow-up titled Joker 2 was confirmed in 2022. The success of the first film undoubtedly played a role in this decision, but it might not translate as favorably for the sequel. Predictions suggest that the opening box office earnings for Joker 2 will be significantly lower than its predecessor’s record-breaking $96 million debut, falling somewhere between $44 million and $57 million domestically. This projected figure places it among notable superhero underperformers like Marvel Studios’ The Marvels and DC’s The Flash.

The sequel to the movie “Joker”, titled “Joker 2“, is not receiving positive feedback from either critics or viewers. In contrast to the initial Joker film, there was a significant disparity between audience and critic reviews, but for Joker 2, this gap has narrowed considerably. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics have given the film a 38% rating, whereas viewers have rated it 36%. In comparison, the 2019 version of Joker earned a 68% “fresh” score from critics and an impressive 89% approval from audiences.

The movie “Folie à Deux” features Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga as Harleen “Lee” Quinzel. Brendan Gleeson, known for his role in “The Banshees of Inisherin,” plays Jackie Sullivan. Catherine Keener, star of “Get Out,” portrays Maryanne Stewart. Zazie Beetz from “Deadpool 2” is Sophie Dumond. Steve Coogan, famous for the “Alan Partridge” comedies, takes on the role of Paddy Meyers. Lastly, Harry Lawtey, who was in “The Pale Blue Eye,” plays Harvey Dent.

Joker: Folie ? Deux is in theaters now.
