Joker: Folie a Deux Opens With Looney Tunes-Inspired Animated Sequence

As a gamer with a deep-rooted love for comic book adaptations and a soft spot for musical numbers, I must admit that the upcoming “Joker: Folie à Deux” has piqued my interest like no other. Having grown up watching the dynamic duo of Joker and Harley Quinn in their animated adventures, the prospect of seeing them brought to life on the big screen with a twist of variety show sequences and Looney Tunes-inspired cartoons is nothing short of exhilarating.

The team-up between Deadpool and Wolverine might have dethroned Joker as the highest-grossing R-rated film ever, but another Joker is coming – and things are about to get a bit unusual. This upcoming movie, slated for release in October, boasts musical elements and stars Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. With its premiere, it’s expected to showcase an array of distinctive features such as a “variety-show segment” and a Looney Tunes-inspired cartoon that will kick off the movie. These details are based on a recent interview with director Todd Phillips, who made a name for himself with films like The Hangover, and whose unique interpretation of Gotham outperformed The Batman at the box office.

As a gamer speaking, Based on what I read in Variety, the upcoming game sequel, Joker: Folie ? Deux, has roped in Sylvain Chomet, the animator from The Triplets of Belleville, to animate the cartoon parts. The show sequence, according to the report, is set to offer a dark twist on the classic duo Sonny and Cher, featuring Joker and Harley.

As a gamer diving into this project, I can share that the initial concepts for these elements may have originated from brainstorming sessions on turning it into a stage play. According to Phillips, there was a fleeting thought of presenting the narrative on Broadway, but the logistical hurdles proved overwhelming even before COVID-19 made it nearly impossible.

According to Phillips, the intention behind this film is to create an atmosphere as if it were crafted by a group of eccentrics. He used an analogy, saying, “It’s like the prisoners are in charge of the insane asylum.”

In the first film, Arthur was seen departing for Arkham Asylum, while in the sequel, he encounters Lee Quinzel, another patient, with whom he develops a unique connection. Unlike the conventional Joker and Harley Quinn dynamic that revolved around the Joker manipulating his therapist and driving her insane, this fresh approach eschews such deviousness.

Harley Quinn, a character initially introduced in “Batman: The Animated Series,” started out as merely the Joker’s sidekick. However, she developed her unique identity in comic books, especially during DC’s 2011 “New 52” revamp. During this period, Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti penned Harley’s solo comic book, which laid the foundation for many of her enduring personality traits seen in contemporary portrayals. Since 2011, she has made appearances in three live-action films – “Suicide Squad,” “Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn,” and “The Suicide Squad” – and starred in her own highly-rated animated series on Max.

Warner Bros. will release Joker: Folie ? Deux only in theaters on October 4.
