Joker: Joaquin Phoenix, Todd Phillips Considered Broadway Spinoff of DC Movie

As a die-hard fan of the Joker and all things Batman, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux. The fact that this film was once envisioned as a Broadway production just adds to its intrigue. Can you imagine Joaquin Phoenix belting out tunes on stage as Arthur Fleck? What a sight that would be!

Back in the day, when “Joker: Folie a Deux” was just a twinkle in someone’s eye, it was initially envisioned as a Broadway performance instead of a movie. Yep, you heard it right! Your favorite clown, Arthur Fleck, and the enigmatic Harley Quinn were meant to dazzle us on stage. However, things took a turn for the cinematic with the brilliant minds of Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix when COVID-19 came knocking. But fear not, dear gaming friends, we’ll still get to see this musical extravaganza unfold on the big screen in October!

Phoenix explained, “Todd was backstage conversing with me via an earpiece.” Upon waking up joyfully, I phoned him, eagerly anticipating if he would join me for a performance.

Initially, we underestimated the time required, which turned out to be around four years, to put such a project together. Moreover, there was doubt about whether Joaquin would commit six months from his schedule for nightly performances. Later, we considered presenting it as a more intimate event at The Carlyle. However, COVID-19 intervened.

The idea eventually evolved into something larger and transformed into “Joker: Folie a Deux“, where Phoenix’s character Arthur will showcase his emotions through music, featuring distinctive elements. According to Gaga, this adds a “dramatic shift” in the movie’s theme.

“Todd boldly and extensively expanded the idea and script for the Joker sequel, demonstrating an impressive level of audacity and intricacy,” she remarked. “It’s a blend of music, dance, drama, courtroom drama, comedy, joy, and sorrow. It showcases Todd’s directorial skills, as he chooses to express creativity over simply telling a predictable love story.”

What is Joker: Folie a Deux About?

The sequel to “Joker” will be a musical focusing on the twisted love story between Arthur Fleck and Harley Quinn. A large portion of the film is anticipated to occur within Arkham Asylum. “Joker: Madness Duet” is being directed by Phillips, with performances from Zazie Beetz, Brendon Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Jacob Lofland.

Previously, the film’s casting director, Francine Maisler, has expressed great appreciation for Lady Gaga’s performance in the role of Harley Quinn within the movie.

Maisler stated, “She’s incredibly talented in this role, trust me. She’ll leave you speechless. I didn’t come up with the idea to cast her. That was Todd Phillips before me. But let me tell you, she’s remarkably convincing – and exceptionally skilled. I saw it, and I was genuinely surprised. We all knew what she could do in ‘A Star is Born’, but I thought, ‘Well, that’s more or less her forte.’ Something she could handle easily and be authentic. But this… She’s truly impressive. Joaquin Phoenix is mind-blowing, but the fact that she can match him, and maintain her authenticity – and not get overshadowed by the intensity of the role and her performance – shows just how talented she is.”

Joker 2 Will Open With a Looney Tunes-inspired Cartoon

It was recently revealed that one of the more unique elements of Joker: Folie a Deux will be a Looney Tunes-inspired cartoon that kicks off the film. The cartoon, from “The Triplets of Belleville” animator Sylvain Chomet”, will star the Joker before sending the character off into the film.

According to Phillips, the intention behind this film is to give the impression that it was created by a group of unconventional minds. He used the analogy, “the asylum is being run by the patients.”

Joker: Folie a Deux opens in theaters October 4th.
