Initially, Jon Bernthal turned down the opportunity to play Frank Castle again in “Daredevil: Born Again” due to creative disagreements with Marvel Studios’ initial concept for the character. However, in a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Bernthal shared that he decided to come back as the Punisher following significant changes to the creative direction of “Daredevil: Born Again,” which occurred after the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Bernthal, who first appeared as Frank Castle in “Daredevil” Season 2 and later starred in his own Netflix series, re-entered the MCU in Episode 4 of the Disney+ revival. His firm convictions about the character’s depiction played a significant role in Marvel’s choice to steer the series towards a grittier, more accurate portrayal of the vigilante, which is also receiving a special presentation from Marvel Television.
In his early discussions with Marvel, Jon Bernthal expressed that he wasn’t sure if their approach to the character of Frank would work. He wanted to see a genuine openness and eagerness to portray Frank as a complex, dark character who would challenge the audience, eschewing any cuteness or humor. Instead, he didn’t find a version of Frank that resonated with him, and what Marvel envisioned for Frank seemed illogical and unlikely to be well-received by fans, which wasn’t something he was keen on pursuing.
In this line of work, it’s crucial to be extremely straightforward about your intentions. It’s essential not to get tangled up in emotions such as love for a project, enjoyment of the role, or desire to do well. Instead, you should focus on serving the project and giving it the respect it deserves, considering those who have supported it in the past and the versions that preceded it. Michael Rowe’s reluctance was rooted in his dedication to authentically portray the character, especially for fans who strongly identify with the Punisher. However, this stance shifted when Marvel Studios initiated a fresh creative approach, inviting him to actively participate in the development process. According to Bernthal, they delved deep into Frank Castle’s psychological and physical state during this revamp.
How Daredevil: Born Again‘s Creative Overhaul Salvaged The Punisher’s Return
As a passionate movie critic, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the reinvention of “Daredevil: Born Again.” Interestingly, the production process underwent a significant overhaul that seemed pivotal in securing Jon Bernthal for his iconic role as The Punisher. In an unexpected move, Marvel halted the initial production direction in November 2023, replacing the original head writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord with Dario Scardapane, who has a rich background with “The Punisher.”
According to insider reports, the initial concept was leaning towards a lighter, more procedural courtroom drama. However, this approach was fundamentally incompatible with Jon Bernthal’s vision for Frank Castle. Charlie Cox, our charismatic Matt Murdock/Daredevil, confirmed this transformation in an interview in January, stating: “There was a dramatic turn after the strike, where we were heading in one direction, which was intriguing yet valid. The consensus was, if we’re returning after all these years, we didn’t want to simply replicate what we had done before. Marvel reviewed the episodes and realized it wasn’t quite hitting the mark.
In Episode 4 of “Born Again”, Jon Bernthal presents a transformed Frank Castle as the Punisher, shedding light on a character who has wholeheartedly adopted his vigilante identity. The episode depicts Castle residing in solitude, immersed in an arsenal and criminal records, renouncing any intention of re-entering regular society. This representation addresses criticisms that the Netflix series gave excessive focus to Castle’s trauma and potential for redemption without fully embracing his role as a vigilante.
Beyond his role in “Born Again,” Bernthal’s impact is also felt in the upcoming Punisher special he’s developing with director Reinaldo Marcus Green. As a co-writer for this project, the actor has promised a gritty portrayal of the character. Previously, Bernthal expressed his dedication to Frank and gratitude for the opportunity to tell a story that he believes fans deserve: “I care deeply about Frank, and I’m grateful for this chance to share a Frank Castle story that I think our audience won’t find easy or light.” In simpler terms, Bernthal is putting a lot of effort into creating an authentic and challenging portrayal of the Punisher in this special project.
Each Tuesday, brand new episodes of “Daredevil: Born Again” are available to stream on Disney+. As the series unfolds, it’s anticipated that Jon Bernthal will assume a crucial role with his portrayal of The Punisher.
