Jon M. Chu Teases Return to G.I. Joe Movie Franchise: “You Never Know”

As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in the vibrant worlds of action and adventure, I must say that Jon M. Chu‘s potential return to the G.I. Joe franchise is an exciting prospect. His directorial touch on Snake Eyes was undeniably impressive, and his recent success with Wicked only cements my belief that he could bring a fresh, captivating vision to the G.I. Joe universe.

As a passionate movie enthusiast who’s always got an eye out for iconic franchises, I’ve been thrilled to see the recent surge of G.I. Joe in the toy and comic worlds, thanks to Hasbro’s successful G.I. Joe Classified series and Skybound’s Energon Universe. My fingers have been crossed for a similar resurgence on the big screen. Unfortunately, last year’s Snake Eyes film didn’t quite make the impact at the box office that we had hoped. But now, with Snake Eyes being introduced in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, there’s a new chance for G.I. Joe to shine on the silver screen. Recently, ComicBook’s Chris Killian asked Jon M. Chu, director of Snake Eyes and now Wicked, if he’d be open to helming another G.I. Joe film in the future.

It’s evident that Chu is dedicated to ensuring Wicked turns out excellent, and so far, indications suggest he has surpassed expectations. However, he leaves open the possibility of revisiting it again in the future.

Currently, I’m in the dark and gritty universe that is GI Joe. I adore this world, Snake Eyes included, as well as all the other characters. As for Henry Golding, he did an outstanding job as Snake Eyes. But who knows what the future holds? For now, I have another GI Joe movie to finish, and my character is Fiyero.

Wicked Part 1 will hit theaters on November 22nd, and like the musical it is adapted from, it will close the curtain with Defying Gravity. That will lead to Wicked Part 2, which is slated to hit theaters on November 21st, 2025. With back-to-back films and all that goes into making the second one as big a hit as many think the first Wicked will be, it’s easy to understand why Chu wants to keep all his focus on Wicked.

Leaving the door open implies there may be another Joe movie from Chu in the future. If this comes to pass, Chu would be stepping into a different terrain for the series compared to 2021. Now, he would find himself in a universe where not only are Transformers and G.I. Joe present, but they are also cognizant of each other’s existence. As demonstrated in the Energon Universe, this interconnection could lead to something remarkable, and it would be intriguing to see what Chu could create with such a foundation.

Chu brought up Golding’s interpretation of Snake Eyes, and although Golding isn’t certain about the future of the series, he hinted that he believes renowned producer Lorenzo Bonaventura has impressive plans for it. “To be honest,” Golding stated, “Lorenzo di Bonaventura is a busy man and an outstanding producer, and I trust that it’s in capable hands.” Regardless of what transpires, Golding suggested that it will likely be a mix of past and future events. He also implied that Paramount has some significant, ambitious plans ahead.

The collaboration between G.I. Joe and the Beasts universe was initiated in Rise of the Beasts, and director Steven Caple Jr. is thrilled to see this long-awaited project come to life on the big screen. He explained his approach by saying, “I wanted to find a way to incorporate G.I. Joe technology since they’re renowned for their tech innovations. I thought perhaps we don’t have to rely on the traditional characters like Snake Eyes and Duke. Maybe there’s an opportunity to utilize lesser-known characters.

Caple Jr. mentioned that there are various series, editions, and groups within the G.I. Joe universe. This includes G.I. Joe: Renegades and its offshoots. He then proposed multiple ideas for these stories to the studio and producers, aiming to expand the universe in general. While Transformers movies have a broad scope, Caple Jr. feels that they’ve been focusing too much on Earth, suggesting there could be more beyond our planet. Even in the Transformers graphic novels, there are other planets and celestial bodies, and he believes we should consider thinking bigger. So, if we plan to make more G.I. Joe movies, perhaps we can make the universe more expansive and explore new territories.
