Josh Brolin & Julia Garner Stun in Barbarian Director’s Chilling New Horror Film

Zach Cregger’s upcoming movie, titled “Weapons“, is anticipated to be one of his most daring ventures yet, slated for release in theaters this August. The director has been discussing the making of the film and sharing intriguing glimpses into its enigmatic plot.

Cregger shared insights into his creative method, stating, “I found myself engrossed in watching the movie while I was writing it“. He explained that he didn’t have a pre-planned script or clear concept. Instead, he allowed the story to unfold naturally as if the film itself was revealing its secrets to him. The final product of this spontaneous approach was Weapons, a mystery horror film featuring Josh Brolin and an actor from The Fantastic Four: First Steps. This gripping tale revolves around the enigma of multiple missing schoolchildren at exactly 2:17 a.m., all connected by this eerie event.

After the acclaimed horror-thriller movie Barbarian by Cregger in 2022, a fierce competition for the rights to the upcoming film Weapons took place. Warner Bros. emerged victorious, and Weapons is scheduled to premiere on Aug 8. The latest images from the movie reveal Julia Garner as Justine Gandy with an expression of fear, while another picture shows Archer Graff (played by someone) appearing resolute. Some other unsettling shots depict children running away from their homes, hinting at the enigmatic ambiance of Weapons.

In a striking departure from his previous works, it appears that “Weapons” could be Cregger’s most somber narrative yet. He candidly discussed the personal experiences that led him to pen this story. “I experienced a profound tragedy in my life that was incredibly difficult,” he shared. “Someone extremely close to me passed away unexpectedly, and I found myself so consumed by grief that I began writing ‘Weapons,’ not out of aspiration, but as a means to confront my own feelings.

He further described it as a deeply personal narrative, mentioning that some parts of it are based on his own life experiences which he feels he personally went through.

Cregger Compares Weapons to His Hit Horror Barbarian

In 2022, the film “Barbarian” turned out to be a shockingly big hit for director Cregger. Starring Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgard, and others, the movie earned over $45 million globally on a budget of just $4+ million, with critics raving about both Cregger’s writing and directing skills as well as the actors’ performances. According to Cregger, his upcoming film, “Weapons,” is even better. He noted that it’s not only more expensive but also more creative in every aspect.

Director Cregger hinted that the film “Weapons” offers more than its initial summary suggests, stating, “The tale is stranger, it’s full of unexpected twists, and it’s grander. I have a larger cast to accommodate. The action sequences are indeed larger. In essence, it’s a bigger, stranger movie compared to ‘Barbarian’.” He confidently added, “Trust me, when you watch it, you will concur with me. It is.

Weapons arrives in theaters on Aug. 8, 2025 from Warner Bros. Pictures.
