During the 50th anniversary special of Saturday Night Live, Tom Hanks’ return took many by surprise, however, this event led to criticism from Republicans. Interestingly, co-host of The View, Joy Behar, momentarily defended them in an unexpected turn.
In a sketch that has since sparked controversy, Tom Hanks once again took on the role of Doug, a Trump supporter from 2016. He was seen donning a red hat and adopting a rural accent. When Kenan Thompson’s game show host reached out to shake hands in congratulations, Hanks’ character flinched, fueling discussions about how conservatives are depicted in the media.
To mark its 50-year milestone, Saturday Night Live featured Tom Hanks portraying a Trump supporter who was apprehensive about shaking hands with a black man due to racial bias. Interestingly, the election of Trump in 2024 was the least racially divisive U.S. presidential contest since 1964.

While social media buzzed with criticism, Behar acknowledged why many found the skit offensive.
On The View’s latest episode, Behar expressed a viewpoint suggesting the show might give an impression that all Trump voters harbor hatred or fear towards African-Americans. As someone who appreciates diverse perspectives, I personally wouldn’t subscribe to such a generalization, as I don’t think any group can be defined by a single trait.
As a film enthusiast, let me share my perspective: Behar didn’t just halt her thoughts; she swiftly redirected them towards her characteristic critique. She asserted, “Many individuals who voted for Trump, in my judgment, have been deceived. They believed that grocery prices would decrease. Instead, they’ve risen. They anticipated inflation would drop. It’s actually escalating. They thought Medicaid was secure. It isn’t. They assumed Social Security was safe. It isn’t either. So it’s not merely racism that put Trump in office. We mustn’t forget that.” She further added, “Of course, they’ll feel offended.
Absolutely, Trump has been in the White House for just a month now. Altering inflation rates is typically a process that requires several months of effort, which I believe even Michael Strahan would acknowledge.

Initially, Behar’s comments caught attention, given that The View is well-known for promoting progressive ideas within the Disney and ABC network. However, since the election, the show has encountered difficulties, such as co-host Sunny Hostin needing to read disclaimers following controversial remarks about figures like Matt Gaetz who lean towards conservatism.
On “The View,” the discussion continued to underscore the gap in opinions, as co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin, formerly of the Trump Administration, shared her viewpoint: “In my opinion, the reaction to it seems somewhat excessive.

Simultaneously, the skit faced criticism from various quarters as well. For instance, former SNL cast member Victoria Jackson voiced her disapproval in an interview with TMZ, echoing conservative commentator Link Lauren’s sentiments on X, who described the sketch as “offensive.
Previously discussed, the recent revival of SNL’s 2016 Black Jeopardy sketch was met with disappointment by numerous viewers, who perceived it as a repetitive reiteration that relied on old stereotypes. The criticism intensified due to the revelation that approximately 30% of black men under 45 voted for Trump in 2024, almost double his support in 2020. This substantial change in voting demographics made the portrayal seem incredibly outdated and insensitive to many observers.

Once more, Saturday Night Live (SNL) has found itself right in the heart of societal discussions. Yet, the unexpected defense from Behar – albeit short – demonstrates that even some of the most forward-thinking voices are beginning to acknowledge instances where humor oversteps its boundaries.
