Jujutsu Kaisen Creator Originally Drafted the Manga With Megumi As Its Hero

As a devoted fan of Jujutsu Kaisen, I find it utterly fascinating to uncover the untold stories behind the creation of this captivating manga series. Recently, Gege Akutami, the mastermind behind Jujutsu Kaisen, shared some intriguing insights into the origins of his beloved franchise, revealing that Megumi Fushiguro was initially intended to be the lead character!

Initially, Gege Akutami, the creator of “Jujutsu Kaisen,” had intended for Megumi Fushiguro to be the central character of the series. This information came to light during a recent art exhibition in Japan dedicated to the popular manga. As fans gather to appreciate the progression of the story, Akutami shared insights into the early stages of “Jujutsu Kaisen.” He also discussed how Yuji Itadori’s role evolved since the franchise’s inception.

During the initial development of what later became Jujutsu Kaisen for Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump, Akutami shared that he initially designed Megumi as the main character and then created Yuji and Nobara Kugisaki afterwards. The early version of the series closely resembled the Culling Game arc but was subsequently abandoned during the planning process. Instead, they explored a fresh idea which eventually evolved into Jujutsu Kaisen as it is recognized today.

Megumi Was Originally Jujutsu Kaisen’s Lead

As a gamer, I’d say this: “I created Fushiguro first, then Itadori, and lastly Kugisaki for my series, Jujutsu Sousen. Initially, the idea of the series revolved around a young boy named Fushiguro who housed Sukuna, similar to the Culling Game setting with Itadori as a supporting character. Later on, during serialization, I came up with Kugisaki as a new character. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel inspired enough to make any unique changes to the original trio, so they became a three-man cell much like Naruto’s team.”

To expand on this, Akutami shared that when Sousen was scrapped during our discussions for serialization, he decided to attempt creating a story better suited for a shonen publication. Already having a clear vision of Fushiguro’s character, he believed Itadori would be more versatile and thus, switched the main character.
