Jujutsu Kaisen Creator Unpacks Their Goal for Gojo’s Past Arc

As a dedicated fan of Jujutsu Kaisen, I couldn’t help but be thrilled when the Gojo’s Past arc was announced. The Shibuya Incident had left me with so many questions about Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto, and I was eager to learn more about their past exploits.

As a huge fan of Jujutsu Kaisen, I’m thrilled to share that the series creator gave an insightful interview about their decision to delve into Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto’s past through the flashback arcs, titled “Hidden Inventory” and “Premature Death.” These arcs took a break from the intense Shibuya Incident and offered fans a captivating look into the history of these beloved characters. The creator explained that they felt it was essential to provide context and depth to Gojo’s and Geto’s complex backstories, enhancing our understanding and appreciation for their roles in Jujutsu Kaisen’s intricate narrative.

During the unique exhibition for Jujutsu Kaisen, its creator Gege Akutami has been providing exclusive insights into the manga’s creation process. He’s given fans a peek behind the scenes, offering fascinating new details about the making of this popular series. Regarding the anticipated arc focusing on Gojo and Geto’s past, Akutami shared his intention to create a flashback arc that would add depth to the Shibuya Incident. By leveraging the strong appeal of these characters, he aims to keep fans engaged as they discover how the past connects with the present.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Why Gojo and Geto’s Past Was Explored

Akutami shared, “I’ve had the desire to craft a backstory arc for quite some time.” He added, “My editor frequently cautioned me against flashback arcs, which typically face negative reception and decreased survey scores. Still, I was determined to experiment with my unique take. The timing of this arc was essential since one pivotal moment from the Shibuya Incident, Gojo’s sealing, wouldn’t have resonated with readers without the background information. So, I inserted it at the most convenient point in the narrative.”

As someone who has spent years immersed in the world of manga writing, I can relate to Akutami’s dilemma when it comes to deciding which characters to focus on in a new arc. In my own experience, I’ve found that readers crave continuity and connection between past and present storylines. They want to see how the experiences and actions of beloved characters have shaped their current circumstances.
