Jujutsu Kaisen Finale Drops a Surprising Mahito Cameo

As a long-time follower of Jujutsu Kaisen, I have to say that Mahito’s final appearance was quite unexpected and intriguing. The way he was waiting for Sukuna in the afterlife, much like Jogo did before him, added an interesting layer to his character. I must admit, it was a refreshing change from the usual post-death silence we see in most characters.

In the second season of Jujutsu Kaisen, also known as the Shibuya Incident Arc, Suguru Geto may have orchestrated the storyline, but no character was more loathed than Mahito, the right-hand man of a cursed energy user. Responsible for the tragic deaths of Nanami and the severe injury of Nobara, this shape-shifting villain met his end at the hands of Yuji Itadori. Interestingly, it was Geto who ultimately killed Mahito. Despite this, Mahito didn’t return to life to join the fight against Sukuna. However, creator Gege Akutami had a unique final appearance planned for Mahito that might leave readers feeling surprised or bewildered.

Warning. If you are only following Jujutsu Kaisen’s anime, be forewarned that we will be exploring some massive spoiler territory for the series finale of the manga. When Mahito perished, many anime fans left out a breath of relief as the joyous antagonist had caused his fair share of pain and torment in Shibuya. Unfortunately, he was not killed by Yuji Itadori himself but was absorbed by Geto, adding Mahito’s strength to himself. In the final chapter, readers are able to see Mahito waiting for Sukuna in the afterlife, a scene that was reminiscent of the king of curses have a chat with Jogo in the second season.

Mahito: One Last Time

While seated in the emptiness, Mahito posed some lingering queries to Sukuna, having engaged in discussions with him previously throughout the supernatural shonen series. Mahito then inquired, “I’ve been pondering something, Sukuna. Aren’t you, in truth, deceiving not only others but also yourself? Wasn’t your life all about seeking revenge against those who despised you as a monstrosity?

In a surprising turn, Sukuna mentions that if reborn, he’d opt for a different lifestyle. This doesn’t sit well with Mahito, who exclaims in annoyance, “That’s dull! You plan to settle down? That makes you the only rebel left!” Since Mahito can’t let his anger subside, it seems he is doomed to spend eternity in the void, unable to find the tranquility needed for him to progress. Interestingly, Mahito has the final words of the series during this conversation, demonstrating that despite being deceased for some time, he left a substantial impact.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 Details

Although Mahito may not reappear in the anime for its third installment, Studio MAPPA remains dedicated to advancing the thrilling animated adaptation of Jujutsu Kaisen. Despite keeping quiet about the release date for the upcoming season, the studio has made it clear that the story will continue. The events set in motion by Suguru Geto in the second season have sparked the Culling Game, and the survivors of Shibuya are bracing themselves for additional complications as a result.

If you need an introduction to the Culling Game, the storyline will assemble quite a few cursed energy-wielders to fight one another under some wild rules. Even though Yuji was able to survive Shibuya, this doesn’t mean that he will have a leg up during the Culling Game as Jujutsu Tech is out to kill both him and his lesser half Sukuna. Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s Yuta Okkotsu has made his debut in the television series and has been given the role of Yuji’s executioner, turning up the heat for the upcoming third season.
