As a gamer who’s been through countless epic battles and heart-wrenching stories, I can genuinely say that Yuji Itadori’s journey in Jujutsu Kaisen has been one of the most captivating and thought-provoking narratives I’ve encountered. Initially, like many characters, Yuji was driven by a quest for a ‘proper death,’ a concept that resonated with me as a gamer who’s often found myself in the heat of virtual conflicts.
In the climactic battle between Yuji Itadori and Sukuna in the anime titled “Jujutsu Kaisen“, Yuji has undergone a transformation in his understanding of a worthy death. Originally, the loss of his grandfather and sense of purpose left him yearning for a fitting end to his life. However, as he navigated through the tumultuous realm of Jujutsu Sorcery, battling various adversaries and losing comrades along the way, Yuji’s perception of what death truly entails has evolved.
In the last chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen, we saw Yuji triggering his unique version of Domain Expansion, which transported him and Sukuna into a vision of Sukuna’s childhood town. The manga then delved deeper into Yuji’s personal Domain, resulting in an emotional exchange between the two characters. During this conversation, Yuji expressed that his perspective on death has changed. He believes that the manner of one’s death is inconsequential; the value of a life remains the same, regardless of the paths individuals choose to follow.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Yuji’s New Meaning of Death
In Chapter 265 of Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuji shares with Sukuna that he once would have been content with dying after completing his intended mission. As Yuji felt insignificant as a mere part in the Jujutsu world’s machinery, he was prepared to sacrifice himself at any moment. However, this perspective shifted as more people around him began to perish. The loss of Junpei, Nanami, Nobara, Choso, and Gojo made Yuji realize that just by living one’s life, one is fulfilling their role.
Even if someone doesn’t connect with anyone at all during their lives, they will still leave behind fragments of themselves out there that give their lives value as a result. Ultimately, how someone dies doesn’t matter but seeing Curses like Mahito and Sukuna treating those lives as worthless angered him. Humans aren’t tools and don’t come with a role to play, and even Yuji now sees more worth in life. He’s now got more to fight for than ever than to simply just fulfill his role to fight.
His current state makes him a greater threat to Sukuna than ever, and it brings us significantly nearer to the conclusion of the battle in Jujutsu Kaisen.
