Jujutsu Kaisen Star Kenjiro Tsuda Praises Lord of the Rings Anime Film, “I Was Glued to the Screen”

As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen more than my fair share of movies that claim to redefine fantasy storytelling. But when it comes to the iconic Lord of the Rings franchise, I must admit that I was initially skeptical about its anime adaptation – The War of the Rohirrim.

The Lord of the Rings franchise has had a long, rich history and has indisputably influenced the very foundation that modern fantasy is built on. Having branched to almost every medium in the entertainment industry, Lord of the Rings is finally making its way to anime with the brand-new feature film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, a prequel set during the reign of Helm Hammerhand. The movie is set to finally release in theaters on December 13th, and reviews are starting to come out.

Among them is none other than the legendary voice actor Kenjiro Tsuda, perhaps best known for his role as Nanami Kento in Jujutsu Kaisen. During a special event for the film hosted by LiLiCo in Japan, the production team talked about the upcoming release. Kenjiro Tsuda was in attendance and shared his thoughts regarding the film, saying:  “It’s full of the goodness of the classics, but we who live in the modern age can also empathize with it.”

He went on to explain that the movie weaves contemporary observations on societal pressures placed upon women and the roles they’re often unwillingly confined to, along with thought-provoking political commentary – a topic the “Lord of the Rings” series has consistently delved into.

The War of the Rohirrim Promises a Stunning Prequel & a Gut-Wrenching Fantasy

In “The War of the Rohirrim,” we can expect an enthralling experience not just for the additional insights it offers into the rule of Helm Hammerhand and his kin, but also for its profound exploration of political fantasy, depicting the harsh repercussions of war on a nation. The narrative focuses on Héra, Helm’s hitherto unnamed daughter, who assumes a commanding position to safeguard her people from the Dunlendings. Previous statements by Gaia Wise, the voice actress for Héra, suggest that she carries a character vibe reminiscent of Hayao Miyazaki’s strong-willed female leads. If Kenji Tsuda’s review holds true, then The War of the Rohirrim promises not only intense fantasy combat but also a nuanced examination of human feelings and interpersonal relationships.

Sola Entertainment, the studio responsible for creating the movie, has previously worked on several series like Tower of God, Rick and Morty: The Anime, and the forthcoming Rooster Fighter anime adaptation. However, The War of the Rohirrim stands as their most extensive and intricate undertaking yet. The team behind this project, particularly director Kenji Kamiyama, appear thrilled to contribute to the esteemed Lord of the Rings franchise. They eagerly anticipate longtime fans of The Lord of the Rings worldwide getting a chance to see everything they’ve been working on after the film’s initial announcement.
