Jujutsu Kaisen’s Final Volume Solves a Major Misunderstanding About Sukuna

As a longtime manga enthusiast who has been following the intricate web of stories that Jujutsu Kaisen weaves since its inception, I must say that the final volumes have left me both satisfied and perplexed. The extra illustrations and epilogue were a delightful treat for fans, shedding light on Nobara, Yuko, Panda, and Uraume’s post-story lives, but the revelation about Sukuna’s relationship with Wasuke has left me scratching my head.

In September 2024, the popular manga “Jujutsu Kaisen” concluded its run and published the final volumes 29 and 30 on December 25th, 2024. These volumes feature additional artwork and a 16-page epilogue focusing on Nobara Kugisaki, Yuko Ozawa, Panda, and Uraume. One of these extra illustrations helps clarify the misconception regarding Sukuna’s connection with Yuji. While Sukuna serves as the main antagonist in “Jujutsu Kaisen,” he remains a complex character shrouded in mystery. The manga only hints at his defeat during the Heian Era by sorcerers, but we never delve into specifics about that event.

During the Heian Era, often referred to as the Age of Enchantments, Sukuna reigned supreme among sorcerers. Even then, he towered above all others, and his true name remains unknown. Known as Ryomen Sukuna, he was crowned the Invincible Curse King. It’s possible that he never had a given name since he was an orphaned child. Sukuna had a unique physique due to being a conjoined twin. In his mother’s womb, he consumed his twin brother, who has wandered for centuries.

The Final Volume’s Extra Illustration Reveals the Relationship Between Sukuna and Wasuke

In the artwork for “Jujutsu Kaisen,” you’ll find a pairing of Wasuke Itadori and Sukuna, accompanied by a caption that clarifies an interesting detail: Itadori’s grandfather, not father, shares the same soul. They wonder if they resemble each other. As of now, the manga is only available in Japanese, so @f9x00 posts the illustration and a translation on X. In chapter 257 of “Jujutsu Kaisen,” Sukuna recounts his origins and discusses how he devoured his twin while still in his mother’s womb. This twin’s spirit wandered for centuries before eventually mating with Kenjaku, an ancient curse user who lived for over a millennium due to his cursed technique. It seems quite plausible that Jin Itadori is the reincarnation of Sukuna’s twin brother, considering Kenjaku once possessed Jin’s wife, Kaori Itadori.

In Chapter 143 of Jujutsu Kaisen, there’s a quick look back at Jin and Kaori (Kenjaku), where Wasuke, Yuji’s grandfather, cautions Jin to abandon “her” or face death regarding a woman he knows is deceased. The manga later clarifies that the bond between Sukuna and Yuji has been misconstrued in many ways. Fans have noted some parallels between Wasuke and Sukuna, but it’s worth mentioning that they share a certain aloneness in their personalities. However, even after the manga clears up this misunderstanding, one aspect remains puzzling.

Did Jujustu Kaisen’s Final Volume Make Yuji’s Family More Complicated?

If Wasuke is truly Sukuna’s twin brother as depicted in Jujutsu Kaisen, then Sukuna’s statement about his brother mating with Kenjaku seems illogical. It might be a translation issue or perhaps Sukuna was mistaken about the circumstances. However, in Chapter 157, it appears that he is referring to Jin Itadori. Kenjaku assumed control over Kaori’s body to craft an ideal vessel for Sukuna, which ultimately fulfilled his objectives.

Despite this, knowing the identity of Wasuke’s wife could have been helpful at this stage to clear up the uncertainty regarding his family matters. It’s evident that Wasuke is fully informed about the events unfolding. He doesn’t exhibit any indications of being under a cursed energy, but he might be cognizant of its existence. It’s plausible that he knows a user of ancient curse is inhabiting Kaori’s body. Unfortunately, Jujutsu Kaisen has not delved deeply into Wasuke’s background, so even his connection with Kenjaku remains unclear.
