In the realm of Jujutsu Kaisen, I’ve noticed that Cursed Energy, Cursed Techniques, and Domain Techniques form the bedrock of their society. These fundamental elements underpin the power dynamics that unfold throughout the series. As students, our main characters are still grappling with the basics, which explains their limited comprehension of the cursed energy system. Interestingly, even many adult characters and teachers share this lack of complete understanding, a challenge we witness them confront collectively. Conversely, the antagonists are frequently depicted as embodiments of curses themselves, granting them unique insights into the origins and mechanisms of the power systems they manipulate.
Yuji Itadori, being a novice first-year student, is understandably unfamiliar with the jujutsu realm. Similarly, Megumi and Nobara have limited knowledge, not due to their encounter with the world, but rather their self-perception within it. This becomes evident when they struggle in a fight against a high-ranking curse, forcing Yuji to surrender his body to the malevolent Sukuna to clinch victory. Both Sukuna and Kenjaku exhibit extraordinary mastery over sorcery, outshining the other characters with their deep comprehension of their craft and executing techniques beyond what our main trio had ever imagined.
Warning: Spoilers Ahead for the Jujutsu Kaisen Manga!
The Basics of Cursed Energy
In a simplified perspective, Cursed Energy refers to the excess energy that escapes from humans, which can manifest as negative forces or curses. In this fictional universe, it’s revealed that sorcerers can tap into this energy during critical moments. Characters frequently enhance their abilities as they approach their full potential. Gojo, renowned as the most powerful sorcerer of the present time, regularly encounters situations requiring him to deepen his comprehension of Cursed Energy and sorcery to avoid defeat. When confronted with such circumstances, contemporary sorcerers often find a way out by advancing their knowledge of the power system.
In simpler terms, our characters face challenges as they grapple with essential aspects of dark energy during battles. For instance, Yuji Itadori finds it tough to match his physical prowess with his energy output, resulting in a delay or lag in his fighting style called divergent fist. Megumi Fushiguro encounters difficulties with his barrier abilities, ultimately leading to an imperfect domain expansion while dueling a cursed entity with fingers. Nobara, on the other hand, struggles with advanced techniques but has a unique ability to sense the harmony between dark energies and can injure spirits’ souls, which causes her to momentarily connect with the dark energy when she strikes a black flash on the spirit, Mahito. These instances underscore that the students have significant room for improvement, yet they will only advance in their abilities through adversity and combat.
The Villains in Jujutsu Kaisen Master Its Power System to Points Beyond Comprehension
Previously stated, the villains of the show consistently display an impressive mastery over the power system, frequently demonstrating their dominance. One instance that highlights Sukuna’s immense power comes when he forcibly removes Yuji’s heart from his body while in control within Eishu Detention Center. This shocking event left both fans and characters like Megumi puzzled about the miraculous abilities Sukuna seemed to possess, as they surpassed anything previously shown. Later, during the Shinjuku Showdown, Sukuna is impaled in the heart by Maki Zenin, yet he’s able to manually pump his blood with cursed energy. This unique ability to manipulate cursed energy to power one’s body is a feat only observed with Sukuna throughout the series.
In the anime “Jujutsu Kaisen,” it’s Kenjaku who orchestrates most of the events. It was eventually unveiled that his expertise goes beyond mere comprehension of cursed techniques and souls; he can even assist characters like Sukuna and other resurrected sorcerers in transforming into cursed items, which can later be revived via vessels. This skill, so unique, left the main characters baffled as to how it was performed. The only character shown to duplicate this ability was Sukuna himself, after witnessing Kenjaku perform it once. Regarding Sukuna’s power, it’s evident that he towers above other sorcerers in the series.
The Pinnacle of Sorcery
In simpler terms, the special ability that sets sorcerers apart from others is called Domain Expansion. This skill is what distinguishes exceptional sorcerers from ordinary ones. Throughout the series, many characters develop this ability, but only a few truly master it, and among those few, only two have demonstrated an unprecedented level of control. Characters like Sukuna and Kenjaku can activate their Domain Expansion with open barriers, meaning they apply their unique techniques to the space within their open domains. This is similar to painting in mid-air instead of on a canvas. What makes Sukuna exceptional is that he can keep his Domain open, and moreover, he can alter its specifications during conflicts with Gojo. Due to his time spent in the Prison Realm, Gojo has the ability to modify the barrier of his Domain to gain an advantage over Sukuna in their clashes. Interestingly, Sukuna was shown to adapt just as quickly as Gojo during their series of conflicts.
In his desperate struggle against the remaining students, Sukuna performs an extraordinary feat – a last-stand effort using his formidable sorcery skills. He’s been battered and weakened by Yuji and others, and he’s yet to fully recover his Domain Expansion due to the repercussions of his battle with Gojo. In this critical situation, Sukuna showcases his proficiency in sorcery once more, creating a new Domain Expansion from an unused part of his brain and unique hand gestures. It’
s clear from Jujutsu Kaisen that the students are still grappling with the complexities of their power system. Yet, it’s understandable considering they’re students at Jujutsu High, learning and growing, and the powerful sorcerers they encounter have honed their abilities through countless battles and lifetimes of experience, living by their ideals and techniques to survive.
