As a die-hard fan of Jujutsu Kaisen who’s been following this masterpiece since its inception, I can’t help but feel a little let down by the choice of characters for the upcoming epilogue. Now don’t get me wrong, I love each and every one of them, but it feels like they’re the unsung heroes of this magnificent tale.
As I stand by, I’ve witnessed the culmination of the captivating “Jujutsu Kaisen” manga unfold in Chapter 271, leaving readers with a blend of sweet and bitter emotions. This is the initial serialized manga masterpiece by Gege Akutami, which skyrocketed in global fame following the 2020 anime adaptation. With anticipation building for the third season of the anime, the “Jujutsu Kaisen” manga is gearing up to unveil its concluding volumes. Shueisha plans to publish Volumes 29 and 30 concurrently on December 25th, 2024; though, at this moment, no information has been disclosed regarding international release dates. Typically, it takes a few months for Japanese manga to be translated and licensed for distribution worldwide.
In the upcoming Volume 30 of Jujutsu Kaisen, an additional 16-page epilogue will be included, featuring new content for fans. This was announced on the official Jujutsu Kaisen account. During Jump Festa 2025, details about the characters Nobara, Yuko, Panda, and Uraume were revealed. Since these characters are less popular or have been underutilized in the story so far, some fans have criticized this choice as it doesn’t focus on more demanded fan favorites like Gojo, Yuji, Megumi, or others. However, considering that many minor characters often get sidelined due to the fast-paced nature of the series, this epilogue might address that issue. It seems the reason these specific characters were chosen is because they’ve been largely overlooked throughout the story thus far.
Warning: Spoilers for the Jujutsu Kaisen Manga Ahead!
Nobara Kugisaki Wasn’t a Part of the Story for Four Years
The significant moments surrounding Nobara’s seemingly fatal encounter and subsequent resurrection have been the most captivating aspects of the series. Yet, this event left her absent from the limelight for a considerable period, even though she is part of the central three characters. In Chapter 124, published in October 2020, Nobara suffers a lethal attack at Mahito’s hands. Since then, her fate has remained ambiguous, with numerous indications suggesting that she might have perished. However, in Chapter 265, she makes an unexpected comeback by employing Resonance against Sukuna.
It’s no secret that fans had long since moved past her in those four years. Nobara’s return, though, comes so late in the story that it feels less impactful than one might expect. She spends time with Yuji and Megumi as life returns to normal. Following their battle against Sukuna, she discovers Gojo’s letter revealing he had found her long-absent mother. Many aspects of Nobara’s past are still shrouded in mystery, suggesting that the author intends to explore these details further.
Yuko Ozawa is a Minor Character With No Connection to the Jujutsu World
In the “Jujutsu Kaisen” manga, Yuko Ozawa makes a brief appearance in just one chapter. Unlike other characters, she’s not a sorcerer, and her world is unfamiliar with curses. During Chapter 64, she encounters Nobara and Yuji as they part ways following their hangout session. Somehow managing to catch up with Nobara, Yuko inquires about Yuji. In a cozy cafe setting, Yuko confides that she’s had feelings for Yuji since middle school. Being overweight, she was often bullied, but Yuji always showed her kindness rather than contempt. Now taller and more attractive, Yuko has found the courage to meet with him.
In essence, this character is someone Yuji finds appealing, a fact noticed by Nobara and Megumi. Yet, when she meets up with Yuji again, she lacks the boldness to express herself, instead choosing to depart soon after their brief interaction. Her part in the narrative is rather limited. Despite leaving an impact on some fans, her significance pales in comparison to the more influential characters within “Jujutsu Kaisen”.
Panda is Overshadowed by Other Impressive Characters
Panda is a second-year student who isn’t particularly noteworthy. His talents are average, and he tends to blend into the background without making a significant impact. What sets him apart, though, is that he’s a sorcerer, not human – a creation of Masamichi Yaga, the principal of Jujutsu Tech High School. Over the years, Yaga raised Panda like his own son. Due to his ordinary abilities, Panda wasn’t involved in the battle against the strongest, especially during the prolonged fight against Sukuna, where he was overshadowed by the more actively participating sorcerers.
Uraume Is the Most Neglected Villain in Jujutsu Kaisen
Uraume is tremendously strong but Akutami decides to keep everything about them under wraps till the end of the story. Their fight with Hakari was one of the most hyped fights in the series. Unfortunately, we only see glimpses of the battle while the story neglects the duo for months, only to focus on the sorcerers fighting Sukuna. In the end, we only see Uraume taking their life after Sukuna’s death.
The only memorable thing about Uraume is in the final chapter where we see their young version being comforted by Sukuna. It confirms that Uraume and Sukuna have a much deeper bond than we initially thought. However, even that heartwarming conclusion doesn’t change the fact that there’s barely anything of interest about the “Frozen Star.”
Gege Akutami Could’ve Untied Some Knots in the Jujutsu Kaisen Epilogue
In the anime series, Jujutsu Kaisen, many questions were left unanswered at the end, making some characters, like Kenjaku, enigmatic and intriguing. Despite being a major antagonist, Kenjaku remains one of the most mysterious figures due to the lack of revelation regarding his true form and background by the author, Akutami. This unexplored aspect could have added depth to the final volume of the story. Moreover, the absence of Gojo’s funeral or his students paying their respects at his grave leaves a sense of incompleteness in his conclusion.
Readers would have cherished scenes where all his students paid tribute to him as they continue their journey towards improving the Jujutsu realm. A glimpse into the Heian Era, perhaps quelling fans’ questions about the “Golden Age of Sorcery,” could have been rewarding. But with just a few days left until the final volume’s release, it appears that some beloved characters won’t make an appearance. However, given that the story is still unfolding, mangaka Gege Akutami might still captivate us by incorporating intriguing elements in this epilogue of Jujutsu Kaisen.
