Jujutsu Kaisen’s Return to Theaters Nets Impressive Box Office Debut

It’s no surprise at all that the recent film from Jujutsu Kaisen drew huge crowds over the first weekend, and it looks like the attendance figures are even higher than expected. In fact, anything related to Jujutsu Kaisen is attracting massive interest, which explains why this anime has become one of the most popular series of the decade – if not the most popular.

According to Mantan-Web, the new Jujutsu Kaisen compilation film, titled Hidden Inventory, premiered in Japanese cinemas on May 30th, 2025, and attracted around 138,000 viewers. The initial week’s earnings reached a staggering 190 million Yen, equivalent to approximately $1.3 million, securing the fourth position among weekend box office sales from May 30th to June 1st. This remarkable performance underscores the immense popularity of the Jujutsu Kaisen franchise, especially considering that re-releases of movies usually don’t perform as well as this one. With international releases scheduled in a few weeks and another movie slated for release soon, the series is expected to maintain its strong box office presence.

Jujutsu Kaisen Places Highly in Its First Week

It’s clear that the latest movie from the franchise didn’t perform as strongly during its opening weekend compared to its previous release, which grossed $23.5 M and eventually earned $185 M globally. This underperformance can be attributed to the fact that this film is a rerun of the Hidden Inventory arc, first released in 2023, which was incredibly popular and successful. Additionally, the screening rate for this movie is only half that of the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie, again due to it being a re-release. However, these figures should improve as the film becomes available worldwide.

The “Secret Stash Storyline” makes up the fifth section of the narrative, taking place prior to the momentous Shibuya Incident. This segment delves into Satoru Gojo’s adolescent years at Jujutsu High School, where he crosses paths with characters such as Geto, Shoko, Nanami, and others. Additionally, it introduces the formidable adversary, Toji Fushiguro, who nearly claimed the lives of both Gojo and Geto, ultimately leading to a fracture in their friendship. Often praised as one of the finest segments within the story, if not the pinnacle, the “Secret Stash” provides a concise yet exhilarating journey that foreshadows an increase in both speed and caliber of the plot unfolding.

The premiere of the movie has given fans a fresh and unique peek into the young trio, sparking even more anticipation for the new material. In addition, the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film is set to hit theaters in October, reinvigorating the fanbase after over 2 years without an anime and nearly a year without the manga. This timing couldn’t be more ideal, as season 3, which covers the Culling Games arc, is right around the corner and eagerly awaited by fans.
