The movie “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” stirred up excitement when it revealed its cast for the main characters, including one of the villains, the Silver Surfer. Julia Garner, an immensely skilled actor who recently appeared in “Wolf Man,” garnered attention as the first woman to portray the character of Galactus’ Herald, traditionally a male role. Some fans speculate that Garner plays a gender-swapped version of Norrin Radd, the original Silver Surfer. However, Julia Garner, winner of three Emmy Awards for her role in “Ozark,” has clarified the true nature of her portrayal of the legendary Marvel character, and it appears to be a nod to the comic book’s original material.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jennifer Garner disclosed that when she joined the cast of The Fantastic Four, director Matt Shakman revealed to her that her character would be Shalla-Bal – a role which sees her as Norrin Radd’s love interest and one of the rare individuals who possesses the power typically wielded by the Silver Surfer.

I had a great time catching up with Matt. We met at a restaurant in Burbank, though I can’t recall the exact name now, but it was for the Fantastic Four project. However, I got a bit puzzled when I realized that the character isn’t actually the Silver Surfer, who is male. But I quickly decided to go along with anything. [Laughs] Since I’m a big fan of Matt’s work, I thought it was important to meet him as he’s an intelligent director and his work resonates with me. And then he clarified that it’s Shalla-Bal, not the Silver Surfer.
