As a dedicated fan of Julianne Hough, I find her journey to be nothing short of inspiring. Her openness about her past relationship with Brooks Laich and her personal growth is truly captivating. It’s fascinating to see how their dynamic shifted as she evolved from a little girl into a woman, seeking stability yet yearning for self-discovery.
Julianne Hough is sharing insight into her divorce from ex-husband Brooks Laich.
On the Jamie Kern Lema show, the co-host of “Dancing with the Stars” shared insights about her past relationship with a hockey player, expressing that their marriage was an incredibly beneficial experience for her during that period.
“During that period, what I felt was essential was finding a way back to my 10-year-old self,” the 36-year-old, who married Brooks in 2017, explained during the August 27 episode. “At age 10, I craved safety, and almost yearned for a strong male presence as a source of stability. So I believe that much of our relationship revolved around this vulnerable girl within me and this steady man offering that anchoring force of security. He created such a wonderful base for me to reconnect with my inner child.”
However, it was during this period of growth, particularly when Julianne started her recovery and broadening her horizons, that made them both understand their requirements had changed.
She revealed, “I began feeling more like myself as a woman, and it was during this transition that I paid more attention to my own voice, rather than the childlike one that had been influencing me unconsciously. As I did so, I noticed changes taking place.”
As she put it, “I really started shifting and changing and questioning what I believed in.”
In the journey I’ve been following, a significant part of it was Julianne openly identifying as not strictly heterosexual, a revelation she shared in a 2019 interview with Women’s Health Magazine. Reflecting on that defining moment now, here’s what I can share…
The dancer expressed to Jamie Kern Lima, “For me, it wasn’t about identifying as straight, gay, bi, or queer. Instead, I feel like I’m discovering what love truly means and I find myself loving people. I can’t quite pinpoint what I’m drawn to, but when I see you, I make a choice. This is the liberating kind of love I’ve been experiencing.”
Meanwhile, as she delved into various aspects of her personality, Brooks (aged 41) found himself embarking on a distinct path.
She told me that her former partner was finding it hard to adjust, as he had recently been released from his hockey team and was grappling with a change in self-identity.
In simpler terms, Julianne observed that there was growth for her but shrinkage for him, and our communication wasn’t working out, and I believe we lacked the maturity to find common ground.
Since parting ways in 2020 and legally divorcing in 2022, they’ve taken time to ponder over their past relationship.
“Julianne remarked, ‘If only we could’ve discussed this earlier with more wisdom, perhaps we might’ve arrived at a different resolution.’ Yet, I believe all events unfolded as they were meant to.”
Despite Julianne dismissing the possibility of reigniting their romantic connection, she acknowledged, “We hold significant, unique places in each other’s lives, having experienced an incredibly intense period together.”
