Junji Ito's Tomie is Finally Coming to The U.S.

As a long-time fan of Junji Ito’s chilling masterpieces, I can hardly contain my excitement as the horror maestro’s works continue to haunt our screens. The upcoming adaptation of Uzumaki by Adult Swim and the live-action horror trilogy by Fangoria Studios are just the tip of the iceberg for Ito fans like me.

Currently, Junji Ito is making headlines due to his exceptional work. Known as the maestro of manga horror, he has spent numerous years crafting chilling original stories that send a shiver down readers’ spines. Coming up next month, Adult Swim will produce an anime adaptation of one of Ito’s most renowned works – the spine-tingling tale called Uzumaki. Additionally, Production I.G. is animating this series. Apart from this animated series, Ito has three live-action horror movies underway with Fangoria Studios. This forthcoming trilogy is not his first venture into live-action, as Tomie serves as a testament to that.

Tomie, created by Junji Ito, is undeniably one of the most renowned characters born from a creative mind. This supernatural succubus has a knack for instilling fear into those who encounter her enchantment. Although she’s been featured in various anime versions, it’s live-action films that have seen more of her presence over time. In total, there are nine live-action movies centered around Tomie, such as the intriguing titled “Tomie Vs. Tomie“, where two girls were possessed by the spirit of the succubus. Additionally, a live-action TV series was once in development for the now-closed Quibi streaming service, but unfortunately, it never came to fruition.

Tomie’s First Move Comes To North America

On November 18th this fall, Arrow Video will introduce a new Blu-Ray edition of the first Tomie movie in the West. Currently, it’s unclear if they plan to bring over the other Tomie films as well, but this development is exciting for fans of Junji Ito nonetheless. Moreover, a live-action version of Ito’s Uzumaki has been released in Japan, demonstrating that his works are still being adapted frequently.

To get a more detailed understanding of Tomie’s debut film, let me share with you Arrow Video’s summary: The movie is adapted from the popular manga series by Junji It?, named Uzumaki. Titled Tomie, it narrates the story of a high-school seductress, recognizable by a mark beneath her left eye, whose kiss has a bewitching effect on men, causing them to become insane. A photography student named Tsukiko (Mami Nakamura) is haunted by nightmares as she attempts to remember repressed memories from her teenage years, with the help of psychiatrist Dr. Hosono (Yoriko Douguchi). Simultaneously, Detective Harada (Tomor? Taguchi) investigates a missing high-school girl and uncovers a series of similar cases dating back decades, all involving a woman named Tomie Kawakami who was murdered by jealous suitors before reaching adulthood. As for Tsukiko’s new neighbor, they appear to be concealing something sinister in their downstairs apartment, which soon manifests into a dangerous form.
