Right from the beginning, Jurassic World sets out to distinguish its fearsome Indominus Rex from other dinosaurs featured in the series. While we’ve seen intelligent and dangerous dinosaurs across the franchise, the Indominus Rex is a genetically engineered monster, comprising elements of iconic dinosaurs like the Tyrannosaurus Rex and Velociraptor, among others. This hybrid creature serves as a lethal weapon, and to emphasize its ruthlessness, the movie swiftly shows its cruelty within the park. However, is this level of brutality something new for the Jurassic World films? In fact, such violence has been a significant part of the franchise’s winning formula.
In Jurassic World, I’m led to encounter the towering Indominus Rex, a creature that cleverly concealed its heat signature and attracted Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and two park workers into its domain. In a swift series of events, this beast unleashed a brutal attack, leaving one of the franchise’s most gruesome deaths in its wake.
Following its sudden appearance and pursuit, the fearsome Indominus Rex swiftly grabs the slowest member of the group using its enormous, demon-like claws, eliciting a heart-stopping shriek before a loud crunch ends the man’s cries. The monster then proceeds to dismember him, leaving spectators in shock and raising the bar for what was yet to unfold. In a nerve-wracking scene outside its enclosure, the Indominus effortlessly flings a car aside, continuing its destructive rampage across the park.

It’s not entirely unexpected that fans on Reddit believe the original Jurassic Park outshines its sequels. One Reddit user even pointed out that Jurassic World wasn’t overly graphic, expressing disappointment that subsequent films reduced violence. However, this is debatable considering the gruesome scenes in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom involving the Indoraptor, which seems to relish tearing apart people rather than just eating them. The scene where Ted Levine’s character Wheatley gets eaten recaptures the horror of the original while also slowing it down. In contrast to the fast and ferocious Indominus, the Indoraptor appears to savor torturing its victim before consuming him.
In a similar vein, it often appears that people overestimate the level of gore and horror in the original trilogy. From the outset, Jurassic Park established its eerie atmosphere as soon as the velociraptor enclosure moved through the jungle foliage. I can still recall the chilling scene where a worker’s hands slipped away while the iconic raptor’s bloodcurdling scream echoed, quickly sending shivers down my spine. It was an effective tactic by director Steven Spielberg that left me captivated from the start.
What Movies Were They Watching?
The movie doesn’t let up in terms of intensity from that point onwards. Beloved characters such as Samuel L. Jackson’s Ray Arnold and Bob Peck’s Robert Muldoon meet gruesome ends. By the end, all that remains of Arnold is his arm, while Muldoon becomes infamous for being eaten by a “clever girl.” If you enjoy graphic violence, it starts in the first film and carries over into the sequels. For instance, Donald Gennaro demonstrates cowardice by leaving the children in a park cruiser with the T-Rex, then seeking shelter nearby in a toilet. Unfortunately for him, this plan fails, and Gennaro ends up being torn apart by the T-Rex’s jaws. Similarly, Dennis Nedry meets a grisly end at the hands of a Dilophosaurus. While it’s worse in the Michael Crichton book, the on-screen deaths are still quite horrifying.

In “The Lost World: Jurassic Park”, the franchise significantly increases the graphic violence on screen. Numerous unnamed poachers meet gruesome ends involving being crushed, devoured, or dismembered throughout the film, but it’s the heroes who suffer the most brutal fates. Eddie Carr (played by Richard Schiff) is responsible for managing the team’s equipment and tragically sacrifices himself to save his colleagues when their trailer plunges over a cliff following a T-rex attack. In recognition of his selfless act, he is ripped from his car by a pair of Tyrannosaurus rex and split in two like a wishbone.
In the thrilling sequel, Jurassic Park III, the carnage persists as the Spinosaurus and Velociraptor relentlessly pursue Sam Neill’s character, Alan Grant, and his companions upon their return. One of the hired mercenaries meets an untimely demise in broad daylight, seized by the Spino, which ultimately leads to the group’s plane crash. Later, the mercenary leader, Mr. Udesky (portrayed by Michael Jeter), experiences one of the most spine-chilling deaths in the series. In a chilling twist, the Velociraptors use him as bait, leaving him alive but paralyzed by severing his spine. Once their trap is exposed, they deliver the final, coldly calculated blow: a snap to his neck.
In terms of graphic violence, Jurassic World holds its own against the original trilogy. The sequel significantly increases the intensity due to advancements in modern cinema technology, refusing to hold back on the action. However, as some fans note, the film Jurassic World: Dominion fell short in delivering such impactful scenes, which negatively affected the overall movie experience. What’s more disappointing is that this lackluster performance in these areas highlights the film’s issues and its overly lengthy running time.
We can anticipate scenes like that jaw-dropping one appearing again in Jurassic World Rebirth. Since it is set on Isla Sorna, last seen in The Lost World, with new variations reminiscent of the Indominus Rex, there’s a good chance we might witness a reoccurrence. Jurassic World Rebirth, featuring stars Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, directed by Gareth Edwards, and with David Koepp back as screenwriter, will hit theaters on July 2.
