Gareth Edwards, the filmmaker known for his visually stunning works like “Monsters”, “Godzilla”, and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” in the field of visual effects, has disclosed that classic science fiction movies such as “Star Wars” and “Alien” served as inspiration for his creation, the genetically altered dinosaur, the Distortus rex, in “Jurassic World Rebirth”. Edwards explained that the D-rex’s distinct features, including its toothy maw like the Rancor and its elongated head similar to the Xenomorph, were inspired by these two iconic creatures. Interestingly, although Ridley Scott’s 1979 “Alien” is highly influential, one of Scott’s more recent works had an even greater impact on Edwards’ creative process.
In the July 2025 edition of SFX Magazine, it was disclosed that Scott’s gritty aesthetic in the 2005 Crusades film, “Kingdom of Heaven,” served as inspiration for the earthy style he aimed to achieve in his reimagining of the island-based Jurassic Park series, titled “Rebirth.
Speaking about the movie “Kingdom of Heaven,” John Mathieson served as the cinematographer, and Edwards commented, “The more I viewed it, the more I felt, ‘This is flawless. There’s not a single disappointing frame in this film.’ I’ve always admired his work. When embarking on a production like this, there are certain talents you aspire to collaborate with, and the studio has a list of reliable professionals.
Moreover, Edwards mentioned Steven Spielberg, who was involved with the original Jurassic Park and serves as an executive producer in the series. There was a brief instance where their roles overlapped, and there was a consensus among them that Mathieson would be the ideal choice for this role.
Mathieson, who received his first Oscar nomination for “Gladiator” in 2000 and filmed movies directed by Scott such as “Hannibal,” “Robin Hood,” and “Gladiator II”, has also worked on big-budget films outside of his partnership with Scott. This cinematographer contributed to productions like the 2011 film, “X-Men: First Class” and the 2022 release, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”.

Additionally, Edwards brought in David Vickery, a visual effects specialist with an Oscar nomination (for 2011’s ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2’), who worked as the visual effects supervisor on both ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’ from 2018 and ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ in 2022. This expertise in dinosaur visual effects was crucial for Edwards.
Edwards praised the ILM creative director and senior VFX supervisor, who has worked on movies like Avatar: The Way of Water, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, as exceptionally talented in dinosaur-related projects. However, it seemed that this individual was no longer interested in working on additional dinosaur films.
To bring Vickery back to Jurassic World, Edwards reminded him, “I don’t want this to appear as an animation or like we’re giving these animals human characteristics.
Edwards expressed his delight at the prospect of creating a comprehensive library showcasing nature’s wonders. He noted that each scene in this film is derived from genuine footage of animals performing their natural actions. Edwards emphasized that this realistic approach harmoniously complemented Mathieson’s cinematography, resulting in visuals reminiscent of ‘Jurassic Park’, as captured by Dean Cundey.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be part of an elite team, alongside Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey, in the upcoming blockbuster, “Jurassic World Rebirth.” Our mission? We’re headed to a secretive island lab – the original Jurassic Park site – to gather genetic material from dinosaurs. The twist? The DNA of these prehistoric creatures might just hold the secret to a groundbreaking drug that could save countless human lives. Catch us on the big screen, starting July 2nd!
