Just Like the Game, The Last of Us 2’s TV Adaptation Is Getting Review Bombed

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us is getting review bombed.

At the moment, there seems to be a significant gap between what critics (with a 95% Tomatometer) and viewers (with a 42% Popcornmeter) think about this show on Rotten Tomatoes. Similarly, in terms of Metacritic ratings for the game, critics scored it 93 while fans gave it 58 points.

In The Last of Us Part 2, the narrative has stirred debate due to its portrayal of an early demise for a cherished character. Some players didn’t find this element agreeable within the game, although we believe the way it was executed was exceptionally well done. In the series adaptation, there are some viewers expressing dissatisfaction with this aspect as well.

On the other hand, the criticisms towards the show are a bit more intricate. Some viewers disapprove of the structural alterations introduced by the writers, particularly concerning Abby’s character development. Meanwhile, others believe the narrative is moving too quickly.

Additionally, opinions about Bella Ramsey’s portrayal of Ellie have been diverse. Some viewers argue that she hasn’t fully embodied the complex character from the game, particularly the more mature aspects. Regrettably, there are others who have used her appearance as a basis for humor, which is unfortunate. Furthermore, it’s disheartening to note that some audiences still exhibit resistance towards same-sex relationships in their TV programming.

It seems quite disorganized, which leaves one questioning if The Last of Us Part II can ever escape its controversial reputation. At this moment, it appears unlikely.
