Just Watch It and Get Over It

A recurring complaint about the latest episodes of Doctor Who is that they’ve been labeled as overly progressive, which some viewers find bothersome, possibly because of the show’s increased representation in terms of characters and plotlines.

For the team behind the production, it doesn’t phase them in any way. In an interview with The Standard, Millie Gibson responded to viewer criticism by saying, “I prefer to appreciate the show for what it truly is.

She shared with the media: “I recall an episode featuring David Tennant – possibly with Martha – encountering Shakespeare. He apparently commented something like, ‘Ah, yes, Shakespeare is quite a charmer.’ This, in essence, encapsulates the unique nature of Doctor Who.

It appears that due to current circumstances, people seem to criticize anything connected to the show. Frankly, I believe such criticism isn’t essential. The series is a delightful exploration of friendship, set in the vastness of the universe, and it’s truly captivating. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey!

Gibson isn’t the first actor to express thoughts about the show being considered ‘woke’, as new cast member Varada Sethu told TopMob magazine that such comments suggest the show is indeed fulfilling its purpose.

As a cinephile, I must admit there have been a few references to Doctor Woke-like characters, but when I see reactions like these, I know we’re on the right track.

She stated: “To be ‘woke’ signifies being inclusive, progressive, and showing concern for others. From what I understand, at the heart of Doctor Who lies compassion, love, and doing what’s morally right.

During an interview on the BBC Radio 2 program Doctor Who: 20 Secrets from 20 Years, Showrunner Russell T Davies brushed off criticisms, stating that he doesn’t give much attention to opinions coming from internet commentators.

He mentioned that discussions about inclusivity are often brought up, he added. Furthermore, there are individuals on the internet who criticize us for promoting diversity and being ‘woke’, and they bring up various topics and concerns related to this.

I can’t spare the time for this, as I’m too busy. To me, what you refer to as diversity is simply an open invitation.

On BBC One this coming Saturday, the 10th of May, Doctor Who resumes its journey! In the United Kingdom, you can catch the latest episodes starting from 8 am on Saturdays on BBC iPlayer. For those living outside the UK, you can find the series on Disney+.
