Justice League’s New DC Universe Status Confirmed (& Fans Will Be Divided)

In the DC Universe, Superman isn’t the lone hero; however, the Justice League hasn’t officially come together in the shared universe at present. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn mentioned the potential of the Justice League as the DCU develops, but he clarified that no such team has been established yet. The actor playing Superman, David Corenswet, is eager about the idea of collaborating with other heroes, but for now, he’s focusing on the present.

Absolutely, absolutely,” Gunn responded when asked about resurrecting the Justice League on-screen. “However, there’s currently no Justice League in existence… not as of now.

Corenswet stated, ‘I don’t usually plan ahead like that or get too hopeful about specific outcomes, only to be disappointed if things change direction.’ Instead, I prefer to remain unaware and then be pleasantly surprised when James informs me of the plans. If Justice League is something he has in mind, that sounds fantastic to me! I’ll keep it at the back of my mind and wait to see what unfolds.

Although a Justice League film or television series hasn’t been announced as of now, various members of the Justice League are making their way into the DC Universe. On the big screen, the Batman film titled “The Brave and the Bold” is in development, and it has been confirmed that a new Wonder Woman movie is being penned. Furthermore, the Lanterns series, which includes characters like John Stewart and Hal Jordan, is set to debut on HBO Max.

During its duration, Superman will showcase a team of superheroes. Known as the Justice Gang, this trio consists of Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific. They are supported by Maxwell Lord. These characters are expected to play significant roles in upcoming DCU productions; for example, Nathan Fillion will return as Guy Gardner in Lanterns.

Gunn emphasized that he’s avoiding origin stories for Superman and Batman in the DC Universe, leading some fans to anticipate that the Justice League would be established by the time ‘Superman’ begins. However, the only live-action Justice League film released in theaters, which was a critical flop and financial disaster, signaled the start of the decline of the DC Extended Universe. Therefore, there’s excitement about a new Justice League movie that does justice to these characters. Unfortunately, it seems we won’t see a Justice League in the DCU anytime soon as it might take several years before one is formed and prepared to safeguard the world from various perils.

From another perspective, it might be beneficial that the Justice League isn’t established yet in the DC Universe. Firstly, Superman needs to succeed to secure the franchise’s longevity. Given this, Gunn has prioritized making the film standalone rather than setting up a future shared universe. Moreover, the DCEU may have moved too quickly in an effort to compete with Marvel, which potentially hindered the development of their interconnected storyline. Unlike Marvel, who introduced the Avengers gradually in solo films before a crossover event, it appears that Gunn aims to follow a similar approach for the DCU. His goal is to win over audiences with these new character interpretations first, before fully committing to an ensemble team-up. Being patient could lead to a prosperous and sustained future for the DCU.
