Life after Grey’s Anatomy is certainly not flatlining for Justin Chambers.
For 16 seasons, the actor known for portraying Dr. Alex Karev on the popular medical series, has decided to be pickier about his acting jobs now that he’s no longer wearing a lab coat.
In a recent interview with Us Weekly on October 15th, Justin shared that he always lets his emotions guide both his artistic and business ventures. He emphasized that he prefers to be involved in compelling narratives, regardless of their length. For him, it’s not about the number of projects he takes on, but rather the quality of the story and the performance.
After parting ways with “Grey’s” in 2020, the 54-year-old actor has since made recurring appearances as the iconic Marlon Brando in the 2022 miniseries “The Offer”, and also made a guest appearance on a recent episode of the crime drama series “Accused”.
As the long-time character Karev on Grey’s Anatomy, it was thrilling to dive into a more intricate, villainous role and demonstrate another facet of my acting abilities. Here’s the scoop: Grey’s Anatomy has granted me a unique liberty that not many actors get to enjoy, and now I can’t wait to delve into passions projects, whether they be nestled within or beyond the glamour of Tinseltown.
As an over-the-moon fan, I can confidently say that one of my heartfelt endeavors is the role I play as a father. This year, the proud dad of five—who shares daughters Isabella (29), twins Maya and Kaila (27), Eva (25), and son Jackson (22) with his wife Keisha Chambers—couldn’t help but brim with pride as he shared stories about his children as they navigate their young adulthood.
I confess, I’ve got a bit to learn compared to them,” I shared with People magazine last February. “These young scholars have graduated from college, and their academic prowess leaves me in awe sometimes. ‘Wow,’ I find myself saying, utterly impressed by their intelligence and curiosity. In the fourth season, young intern Norman found himself facing misconceptions about his role, as people mistakenly thought he was an attendant because of his youth. Unfortunately, he made a mistake by informing a patient she was dying, and later suffered a stroke himself. After undergoing surgery to remove the clot, Norman decided that he would shift his focus to psychiatry in the following stages of his career.
Edward Herrmann, who was quite famed in the acting world, is primarily recognized as Richard Gilmore from the popular series, Gilmore Girls. He also made appearances in multiple episodes of shows like The Good Wife, Harry’s Law, and even American Dad, prior to his passing in 2014.
In a different phrasing: During Bailey’s maternity leave, Sydney, known for her bubbly personality, temporarily filled her role and became quite the talk of the town. Her cheerfulness, however, was often a source of annoyance to others. At one point, she went out on a date with Derek, but then vanished in early season four. Now, it appears that Sydney (Dr. Heron) is making a comeback, as hinted by the season 21 trailer.
Recently, Kali Rocha has been seen in roles on shows like Liv and Maddie, Man with a Plan, and she is set to appear in an upcoming episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm in 2024.
Among the most heart-wrenching scenes on this list, at the end of season five, George made a fateful decision to join the army as a trauma surgeon. On his way to carry out this choice, he heroically saved a woman from being run over by a bus, but in doing so, he was struck himself. His injuries were severe and he was unrecognizable when he arrived at the hospital. It wasn’t until he wrote his nickname “007” on Meredith’s hand with his finger that anyone recognized him. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to save him, and he tragically passed away.
Following a series of challenging backstage periods (such as Isaiah Washington reportedly uttering offensive language towards him), Knight found it difficult to reconcile with certain storylines for George and the limited screen time George had during the early episodes of season five. As a result, he requested to be let out of his contract.
Knight returned to Shondaland in 2017 for an arc on The Catch, and has also appeared on The Good Wife, 11.22.63, and Genius, among other series. In 2019, he appeared on The Bravest Knight and in 2020, he appeared in HBO Max series The Flight Attendant with Kaley Cuoco. He also returned to Grey’s for one episode to meet Meredith during her COVID-19 coma.
In the fifth season, Erica Hahn ended both her relationship with Callie Torres and her employment at their hospital after learning that Callie had failed to disclose a critical event. This incident occurred when Izzie Stevens, in an attempt to save Denny Duquette’s life, unintentionally cut his LVAD wire. The heart transplanted into Denny was from one of Erica’s patients. When Callie chose not to report this situation, Erica decided to leave the relationship and her job.

In the early part of season six, our intern, Ryan, went missing. More recently, actor Brandon Scott has been seen in shows like ‘Dead to Me’ on Netflix, ’13 Reasons Why’, and ‘This Is Us’.
In the series, Izzie Stevens developed cancer, wed Alex Karev, overcame her illness, but mysteriously vanished during season six. Later, she reappeared and confessed that she no longer felt Seattle was her permanent home. Subsequently, Alex received divorce papers from her. It was later revealed that Izzie had secretly given birth to Alex’s twins, moved to a ranch in Kansas, and specialized in surgical oncology.
Katherine Heigl started distancing herself from the show in 2008 when she chose not to be nominated for an Emmy because she didn’t believe the content was worthy. By 2010, her character had vanished entirely. In the following years, she expressed a desire to reprise her role, but Shonda Rhimes, the creator, has shown no interest in doing so. “I’ve had enough of that story,” she said to TVLine in 2015.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but trace the brilliant career of Katherine Heigl. From her early success in romantic comedies, she graced our screens with a few more heartwarming films. Then, she made her triumphant return to television with State of Affairs, followed by Doubt, and most recently, she added her charm to Suits and the 2020 series Firefly Lane.
Despite the frequent turbulence among Grey’s interns, Megan might opt for the scalpel yet. She found herself in a complicated love situation involving both Steve and Pierce: while dating Pierce, she ended up with Steve, which led to Pierce wanting to harm Steve. Eventually, Megan became pregnant by Steve, married him, and hasn’t been seen since season six following Derek Shepherd’s decision to rehire her – a storyline that unfolded quite dramatically.
Molly Kidder has taken on several acting roles since her stint on ‘Grey’, such as an appearance on the show ‘Outsourced’ in 2010, as well as parts in some indie films.
In the TV series, Josephn Williamson, who was once a part of the love triangle involving Megan/Pierce/Steve, got let go during a wave of layoffs in season six. Since then, he has made appearances on shows like “Here and Now” and starred alongside Christian Bale and Matt Damon in the 2019 movie “Ford v Ferrari”.

Since his vanishing act from Grey’s, Mark Saul has made appearances on various TV shows such as Franklin & Bash, Mom, The Great Indoors, Grace & Frankie, and Modern Family.
In the sixth season, Nurse Olivia lost her job due to the merger with Mercy West. However, she made a brief reappearance in the fourteenth season when her son accidentally swallowed a toy while visiting her parents in Seattle. Coincidentally, Alex, who had previously given her syphilis, took care of her son during this visit. While there, Olivia also had an opportunity to chat with Jo, Alex’s fiancée at the time.
Since her departure from Grey’s Anatomy in 2009, Sarah Utterback has been seen on various TV programs. Notably, she appeared on Reception and Mysteries of Laura.
Graciella, the intern who was last spotted during the season six hospital shooting, has been noticeably busy. She’s been involved in a storyline on “How to Get Away with Murder,” and has made appearances on shows such as “S.W.A.T,” “The Good Doctor,” “American Housewife,” “Animal Kingdom,” “Snowfall,” “Criminal Minds,” “NCIS: LA,” “Anger Management,” “Bones,” and the 2019 miniseries “Reckoning.
In season six, Nora became the unfortunate victim when Gary Clark, armed with a weapon, entered the hospital with the intention of fatally harming Derek. Tragically, she lost her life instantly after being shot in the head.
Actress Nora Zehetner made guest appearances in several episodes of the popular show “Mad Men” following her departure from “Grey’s Anatomy,” and more recently, she played leading roles on the television dramas “Designated Survivor” and the 2019 series “The Right Stuff.
During the filming of season six, Percy unfortunately met his end. Unlike other deaths, this one was prolonged as Percy found himself trapped in a room alongside Mandy Moore’s character and Bailey. He was shot at close range. Despite Bailey’s valiant efforts to save him, Percy’s fate was sealed when the elevators malfunctioned during the evacuation, leaving him with no escape route.
Robert Baker has been thriving quite well for some time now, featuring in shows such as Riverdale, Modern Family, The Originals, and more recently taking up the role of Otis Graves on Supergirl.
OBGYN Lucy seemingly took a remarkable job in Africa without consulting Alex, largely due to the fact that Alex had not discussed his possible move to Africa with her. Consequently, Lucy relocated to Africa herself and communication ceased after season seven.
Presently, Rachael Taylor is most recognized for her role as Jessica Jones’ friend Trish in the Netflix series “Jessica Jones” and also in “The Defenders.
In the beginning, Addison started off as Derek’s disgruntled ex-wife, but later won over audiences with her own standalone series. Most recently, she was a regular character on Grey’s Anatomy during the somewhat contentious musical episode in season seven. During this time, she played a crucial role in saving Callie after her car accident. Additionally, she made appearances in the 2012 episode where Meredith fantasized about her mother being alive and happily married to Richard, while Derek and Addison were still unhappy together. She returned again for a story arc in 2023.
She ended Private Practice married to Jake (Benjamin Bratt) with a son, Henry.
She subsequently featured in “Fargo”, starred briefly in her own series “Bad Judge”, portrayed a grieving mother in “13 Reasons Why”, and played a role in the conclusion of “The Umbrella Academy”. Additionally, she appears on the 2020 series “Emily in Paris”.
In a heartbreaking turn of events for Meredith’s lively half-sister, Lexie, the show’s most tragic plane crash took yet another emotional toll: she didn’t survive. Tragically, Lexie didn’t make it back to what was once known as Seattle Grace Hospital alive, having been pinned beneath debris of the plane while her beloved Mark Sloan wept over her loss. During Meredith’s COVID-19 coma, Lexie and Mark appeared together, suggesting they reunited in the afterlife.
Actress Chyler Leigh previously appeared in the quirkily titled show “Taxi Brooklyn,” subsequently transitioning to portray the tough-as-nails character Alex Danvers on “Supergirl.
In the eighth season, Mark, more commonly known as McSteamy, was involved in a plane crash. Unlike others, he didn’t die instantly. He managed to return to the hospital but his injuries were too severe to survive for long. Later, the hospital was renamed in honor of both him and Lexie after the survivors of the same plane crash bought it using their settlement money from the lawsuit. Interestingly, Mark reappeared with Lexie during Meredith’s coma, suggesting that they might have found each other again beyond death.
Eric Dane departed from his previous show to take on a leading role in TNT’s “The Last Ship,” which concluded after five seasons in November 2018. Currently, he appears alongside Zendaya and Storm Reid on the HBO series “Euphoria.
In season nine, you might recall the OGYN resident that Jo dated. Their relationship ended violently when he discovered secrets she had kept from him. The altercation escalated physically, causing Jason to fall and hit his head, resulting in a hospitalization. Alex dissuaded him from pressing charges against Jo, and since then, he has not been seen on the show again.
Charles Michael Davis has continued his successful acting career, appearing in “The Originals” on The CW, followed by “Younger” on TV Land, then “For the People” on ABC, and most recently “Chicago P.D.” on NBC. He’s clearly doing well!
In season 10, the peculiar intern Heather passed away amidst a massive storm. Tragically, she suffered electrocution while attempting to assist Richard Webber.
Tina Majorino most recently appeared on CBS’ Scorpion and an episode of The Good Doctor.
In the series, Dr. Herman transformed into an unusually strict mentor in fetal surgery for Dr. Shepard in Arizona. However, she appeared much more reasonable after Arizona discovered that Nicole had a colossal, terminal brain tumor. Amelia managed to remove the tumor, but later on in season 11, Herman lost her sight and eventually departed. Nevertheless, she reappeared in season 14 to assist Arizona in exiting the show by providing grant funds to establish a women’s health center in New York City.
Geena Davis appeared in the TV show “The Exorcist” on Fox in 2016 before rejoining “Grey’s Anatomy.” More recently, she has taken on recurring roles in Netflix’s “GLOW” and the revamped animated series “She-Ra.
After the plane crash, Cristina Yang endured a prolonged period of hardship before making a full recovery. Later, she found out that she couldn’t win the Harper Avery award at the hospital where she was working and started to contemplate moving on. Her former lover, Preston Burke, then invited her to Zurich to manage the advanced hospital he had established, allowing him to retire with his family. In season 10, Cristina finally decided to leave, sharing a farewell dance with Meredith before going.
Currently, Sandra Oh holds a significant position in television stardom. She plays Eve in the highly praised BBC America series “Killing Eve,” for which she received a Golden Globe. Similar to Geena Davis, she appears regularly on Netflix’s “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.” Additionally, she provides her voice for a character within Robert Kirkman’s animated series, “Invincible.
Initially an overconfident intern, Shane later became a full-fledged resident who worked excessively, often pushing himself to the brink of exhaustion. However, he developed a bond with Cristina and requested to accompany her to Zurich, a request he eventually fulfilled.
Gaius Charles, famously known for his role as Smash Williams in Friday Night Lights, has also been seen in the TV shows Aquarius and Taken. More recently, he made an appearance on God Friended Me, which airs on CBS.
For a few challenging seasons, Derek Shepherd accepted a position working under President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C., inviting Meredith and their family to join him. However, she declined, leading them to live separately for some time. Eventually, he chose to rectify the situation by returning home to perform his job remotely instead.
In the heart-pounding moments of season 11, when Mer and he found solace in each other once more, fate cruelly intervened. As I was heading back to wrap up some unfinished business, I stumbled upon a horrific car accident that consumed hours of my time tending to the victims. Just as I managed to climb into my own vehicle for a well-deserved respite, disaster struck again – a truck barreled into me.
Patrick Dempsey stated that he parted ways with the series due to finding it challenging to maintain captivating plotlines, and he sought more time to devote to his loved ones. After his departure from Grey’s, he has appeared in movies like Bridget Jones’ Baby, a miniseries titled The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair, the show Devils, various commercials that subtly remind us of his past role as a TV physician, and there are whispers of him being involved in an Enchanted sequel.
He shockingly returned to Grey’s for a series of dream sequences in season 17.
Leah Murphy, a resident who had faced numerous challenges, ultimately found herself let go during the tenth season. It seemed that the rigors of being a surgeon were simply too much for her. However, unexpectedly, she resurfaced in the thirteenth season to collaborate with Maggie. But, just as abruptly, she disappeared once more from the scene a few episodes later.
Tessa Ferrer was also a cast member in the Hulu rendition of the World War II mini-series “Catch-22,” which featured George Clooney.
As a devoted admirer, I chose to part ways with Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital when my partner, Penny – who’s had her fair share of controversy – landed an enticing fellowship in New York. Initially, after a heart-wrenching custody dispute with Arizona, I had decided to remain in Seattle. However, the events at the end of season 12 saw Arizona reconsider and graciously sent me off with our daughter Sofia.
Sara Ramirez departed to star in a new role for CBS’ “Madame Secretary.” Afterward, she portrayed the contentious character Che Diaz on HBO’s “Sex and the City” sequel series, titled “And Just Like That.
Penelope’s stint at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital was challenging right from the beginning. Upon her arrival as Callie’s new girlfriend, she came with a controversial past, having been one of the doctors blamed for Derek’s death. To make matters worse, she had to endure working alongside a cranky Meredith. Later on, when Penelope secured a high-profile position in New York and Callie chose to accompany her, it triggered an emotionally charged custody battle between Callie and Arizona. By the last update, Penelope and Callie had split up, which led to Arizona relocating to New York. However, their relationship was destined for failure from the start.
Samantha Sloyan gained prominence by playing the role of Leigh in the series ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, and she has also made appearances on television shows like ‘SEAL Team’ and ‘The Rookie’.
In Season 13, Minnick stepped in as Richard Webber’s replacement in mentoring the residents, but her strict adherence to rules and disregard for individual circumstances led to widespread dislike among the residents, culminating in Meredith’s suspension. Her excessive focus on protocol resulted in failing to notify the police that a resident was missing during a fire, which nearly cost Stephanie’s life and eventually led to Minnick being dismissed from her position.
Later on, Marika Dominczyk teamed up with her spouse (formerly of Grey’s Anatomy), Scott Foley, in the brief-running ABC series, Whiskey Cavalier.
At the conclusion of season 13, Stephanie opted to venture out and discover fresh experiences, having survived a fire incident after prolonged fatigue and mourning the loss of her boyfriend Kyle, who was portrayed by Wilmer Valderrama.
As an ardent admirer putting words to my passion, I can’t help but share the thrilling journey Jerrika Hinton embarked on in 2018. She gracefully took center stage in the brief yet impactful HBO drama, “Here and Now.” But that wasn’t all! Her talent was recognized by the creators of the Amazon series, “Hunters,” where she became a formidable Nazi hunter, adding another layer to her already impressive acting portfolio.
In the early part of season 14, Nathan decided to depart from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital as his long-held dream finally materialized: his fiancée, Megan Hunt, who had been held captive for ten years, came back. The two of them, along with the child Megan had adopted during her time abroad, relocated to Los Angeles. This development unfortunately put an end to Nathan’s budding relationship with Meredith, but it was a wonderful, fulfilling conclusion for Riggs.
Martin Henderson, interestingly enough, made an appearance in Britney Spears’ music video for “Toxic”, went on to feature in the television series titled “Virgin River”.
