As a podcast enthusiast who’s always on the lookout for captivating content, I must say that Jonathan Ross and Emily Atack’s candid conversations in their podcast are nothing short of riveting. Their shared experiences and openness about their struggles make for an incredibly engaging listen. The host, Gilligan, does a commendable job of making the listener feel like they’re part of the conversation, not least because he brings his own tales from the entertainment industry into the mix. It’s a podcast that leaves you wanting more.

The Funny Comics Fan Club

https://open.spotify.com/watch?v=episode/4rImkTvOTHRyDeIcgjg6jl

David Hepworth’s exploration of the vibrant tapestry that is British comics (such as The Beano, Dandy, etc.) starts with an episode focusing on Jackpot, a character from a time when it was still acceptable to let readers try to win their own weight in chips. This piece then delves into Nutty, which introduced the world to Bananaman. One can only anticipate that future discussions will involve insights from the artists and writers who created this chaos during an era when a family’s news diet wasn’t complete without a weekly dose of colorful chaos, and it was unusual not to see a bulldog biting into a pair of postman’s trousers with oversized teeth. 45 years have passed since the Shah of Iran was overthrown and an Islamic republic took his place. But how did this happen? This fascinating podcast provides historical context, delving into 200 years of Iranian/Persian history. It shows a nation struggling with the delicate balance between absolute monarchy, powerful Muslim clerics, and a yearning for parliamentary democracy. Furthermore, it was not just internal forces at play; foreign powers also sought to exert their influence. A fatwah against tobacco use even played a role in the events that unfolded… JEREMY ASPINALL

Extremely American

National Public Radio is one of the US’s most authoritative media outlets, and here’s an example of its outstanding journalism. That American democracy is under threat is not news, but host Heath Druzin explores the issue in a way that goes way beyond the outpourings of Trump, with a thorough examination of the role that Christian nationalism is playing in ever-expanding areas of American life. As with Radio 4’s The Coming Storm, this is an alarming and compelling pre-election eye-opener. SIMON O’HAGAN

This podcast isn’t your typical one; neither is its host. Femi Oke is a name that should be known in every household – her journalistic abilities are sharp and deeply compassionate. In this episode, she delves into the story of young Nigerian women who were trafficked to Germany to work as prostitutes by Josephine Iyamu, a British citizen (and a nurse, no less) who was the first to be prosecuted under the Modern Slavery Act. This is the true account of sex, money, and the supernatural world, and how the terrifying belief in a juju curse almost ruined these women’s lives. ANNA JONES

The birth of New Order out of the ashes of Joy Division is one of the best known stories in rock music. It also heralded a more cosmopolitan flavour to the band’s sound, with their hit Blue Monday catching the ear of labels across the pond. This is the starting point for the second series of this podcast about the history of the two bands, which combines interviews with 1980s social commentary and features contributions from fans Billy Corgan and Johnny Marr. In simpler terms, the German version of the World Service (DW) has launched a fresh season of “Don’t Drink the Milk“, offering historical context for today’s international news. The premiere episode features host Rachel Stewart inquiring about the origins of witch hunts, discussing the misogyny during the Middle Ages, the Puritan belief in witches as devil-worshippers, and Donald Trump’s accusations of a political witch hunt against him. The second installment delves into the emerging opioid crisis in Africa with similar enthusiasm. FIONA HUGHES

What Did You Do Yesterday?

David O’Doherty, an Irish comedian, along with his co-host Max Rushden, boastfully title their show “and that’s it”. This duo is known for having in-depth conversations with their guests about the most mundane details of their previous day. Comedian Alex Horne is among the famous names who join this absurd journey. By the 20th minute of their hourlong chat, Horne has only discussed events up until 7 am. This show is ideal for listeners who enjoy tuning in to absolutely nothing of consequence.
