It seems that some actors are so versatile in their performances, I sometimes find myself pondering over a hypothetical world where cloning is possible, and imagine remaking timeless classics with a single extraordinarily talented individual taking on all the roles. It might sound far-fetched, but performers like Kaitlin Olson, who displays remarkable versatility in her work, make one wonder if such an experiment could ever be justified. In fact, she’s slated to deliver three impressive performances in 2025 on television alone, and when she shares comedy insights, it’s hard not to listen.
Case in point: the SAG-AFTRA Foundation shared an Instagram video featuring Olson’s mini-Masterclass session that, while obviously limited in time, still lays out a few of the best tenets to adhere to within a comedy career. As she put it:
In the realm of improv, focus on hearing more than speaking. Hear, hear, hear. You don’t need to fill every moment with words. Particularly in scenes with experienced performers, let them shine while you watch and learn. Contribute when inspired, but remember it’s okay not to be the center of attention all the time. Also, remember that mistakes are an integral part of the process. Not every line will be a hit, and that’s perfectly fine. It’s supposed to be that way.
The art of listening rather than speaking during a situation is something that develops over time and with experience. In our youth, we often believe we can deliver witty remarks instantly, like in MST3K, but this is seldom true. Instead, early on, it’s more about trying many things, even when most of them don’t hit the mark.
Although it might not make sense at first glance, the most useful tip besides “Listen” is to “Experiment with various options.” This doesn’t mean you should attempt everything constantly. That’s certainly not desirable.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can confidently say that Kaitlin Olson’s knack for physical, verbal, and intellectual wit makes her a valuable asset to any TV comedy series, whether it leans towards the broad or the satirical. It’s hard to believe, then, that this exceptionally talented actress found herself starring in one of the most prominent shows of her career in 2024 – an hour-long crime-solving procedural! Remarkably, this series also boasts other comedy veterans like Judy Reyes and Taran Killam.

Watching this compilation of Kaitlin Olson from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” fearlessly using her body for comedic purposes never fails to impress me even more.
It’s not hard to envision that every television executive dreams of having a talent like Olson, along with a similar dedicated fanbase, given that “High Potential” was one of the most-watched debuts in 2024. Remarkably, it further expanded its audience during its midseason comeback. As for procedural shows not typically being rich in award nominations, Disney’s TV chief appears optimistic about the actress garnering an Emmy nomination.
Olson will appear on the ongoing fourth season of the Emmy-winning comedy “Hacks,” as well as the upcoming 17th season of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” and let’s not forget about the second season of ABC’s drama-comedy series “High Potential,” which has already been renewed.
For those who saw the video but are still struggling with being humorous, perhaps pursuing an engineering degree could be a more suitable path for you instead.
