As a fan who has been captivated by the enchanting performances of Billie Piper throughout her illustrious career, it is a sheer delight to witness her mesmerizing portrayal of Cassandra in Netflix’s Kaos. Her ability to embody a character that is initially perceived as eccentric yet ultimately reveals a profound truth is nothing short of captivating.
In Netflix’s latest hit show, “Kaos,” there’s a lot of disorder, featuring an extraordinary ensemble cast. At the forefront are Jeff Goldblum and Janet McTeer, but also included are talented actors like Billie Piper, Suzie, and Eddie Izzard in supporting roles.
As a die-hard film enthusiast, I must say that one of the most enigmatic characters in the Doctor Who universe is none other than Cassandra, brilliantly played by the talented Billie Piper. At first glance, she seems to spew nonsensical babble, but as she forms a connection with Riddy, portrayed by Aurora Perrineau, her words start to hold a profound meaning.
Georgi (Banks-Davies) and I had a conversation with Billie about Cassandra. We pointed out that while Cassandra is indeed telling the truth, everyone else believes she’s insane. Initially, in episode 1, viewers might perceive Cassandra as not mentally stable. However, by episode 8, it becomes apparent that she’s actually a truth-teller.
In essence, the viewers embark on this adventure alongside Riddy, if you will. The character of Cassandra is designed to convey a sense of tragedy; she speaks the truth, yet nobody believes her, creating an unbearable torment for her.
“Though she possesses the ability to foresee future events, much like a prophet, people refuse to believe her. Yet, when Riddy and she established their unique bond, it was as if her predictions were finally validated. Consequently, we had to endure the anguish of being disbelieved.”
Covell further disclosed Goldblum’s initial portrayal method for a ruthless and strategizing version of Zeus, stating, “My personal approach to embodying Zeus was: ‘What if the ruler of all gods were experiencing a midlife crisis? What would that manifest as?'”
As a movie critic, I found myself drawn into the film by the protagonist’s palpable paranoia – a captivating entry point for me in my discussions with Jeff, who proved to be an exceptional collaborator. He meticulously scrutinized the scripts and would share his brilliant ideas, which only intensified once we were on set as he delivered stunning improvisations that made the experience all the more enjoyable.
Chaos offers a witty, contemporary take on Greek mythology that’s meant to be relatable for all, as Covell emphasizes.
“I think the joy about the myths is that they are eternally relevant. I think you can press pause at any point in human history, and they will be relevant because they’re timeless themes about love, death, power, abuse of power, dysfunctional families,’ Covell explained.
“They’re always relevant. And that’s why people always come back to them.”
