Kaos star and creator were moved to tears over trans storyline

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for stories that challenge the status quo and champion diversity, I find myself utterly captivated by Charlie Covell’s new series, Kaos, now streaming on Netflix. This intriguing take on Greek mythology, where mortals rise against petty, spiteful gods, offers a refreshing perspective that resonates deeply with my own experiences and values.

Check out Charlie Covell’s latest creation, “Kaos,” streaming now on Netflix. It’s an engaging tale where mortals band together to challenge a band of arrogant, malicious, indifferent, and heartless Greek deities.

In this series, one significant character is Caneus, a transgender individual inspired by Greek mythology, who shares a romantic plot with Riddy, portrayed by Aurora Perrineau.

In the captivating world of this series, I’ve been enthralled by the character of Caneus, brilliantly portrayed by the talented trans actress, Misia Butler. Recently, at a press gathering, she shared a heartfelt tale about an emotional scene we filmed together.

Butler expressed his awe over playing Caneus: “It was absolutely mind-blowing. I can’t help but say this time and again during filming, throughout this entire process. As soon as I learned about this character, I became captivated. And since I discovered the character in school, my fascination only grew even stronger.”

“It’s truly remarkable to encounter writing that fully develops a trans-masculine character beyond their identity, allowing them to shine as a unique individual. Such portrayals are not common, and I consider myself fortunate to have come across this.”

Butler went on to say: “On my first day of filming, we were shooting the scene where my character and another spoke at length on a bench. The conversation left me deeply touched. Afterwards, I noticed that Charlie was equally affected. We ended up shedding tears and embracing each other.”

“If I were a child watching this scene, I’d feel deeply understood, and my experience would be more impactful because I’d see myself portrayed so powerfully.”

As a movie aficionado, I’m thrilled to share that this captivating series boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including myself (figuratively speaking) alongside the talented duo of Butler and Perrineau. But the star-studded lineup doesn’t stop there; it continues with the inimitable Jeff Goldblum, the formidable Janet McTeer, the enigmatic David Thewlis, the intense Stephen Dillane, and the radiant Billie Piper. Each of these actors brings their unique charm and skill to the screen, creating a dynamic viewing experience that’s not to be missed!

“The series summary goes like this: For ages, Zeus has been the King of Gods, basking in his glory. However, one day he finds a wrinkle on his forehead, which triggers feelings of unease within him. As neurotic thoughts take over, Zeus becomes increasingly anxious and starts to suspect that his reign is about to end. Convinced that the signs are everywhere, he embarks on a perilous journey.”

In a covert manner, Hades, the God of the Underworld who was once trusted by his brother Zeus, is experiencing a decline in control over his dark realm. A growing number of deceased souls are accumulating, causing them to become agitated and restless. Meanwhile, Hera, Queen of the Gods, exerts her power not only on Earth but also over Zeus, using an unconventional approach.

However, her strength and autonomy are at risk due to Zeus’s escalating unease, compelling me to intervene. Meanwhile, Zeus’s rebellious son, Dionysus (portrayed by Nabhaan Rizwan), is spiraling out of control, seemingly heading for a cataclysmic clash with his father in the cosmic arena.

On our planet, people yearn for change, yet Poseidon (Cliff Curtis), deity of seas, storms, earthquakes (and horses), seems preoccupied with the grandeur of his super-yacht and the location of the next social gathering. The welfare of ordinary individuals holds little significance to him. Regrettably for the divine beings, some of these mortals are starting to grasp this reality…

In this story, we encounter four individuals – Riddy (Aurora Perrineau), Orpheus (Killian Scott), Caneus (Misia Butler), and Ari (Leila Farzad) – who hail from diverse backgrounds. However, they share a common thread: an otherworldly bond that links them in their struggle against Zeus. Each character holds a unique position, and one of them might be the chosen one to topple the gods.
