Karate Kid: Legends Could Finally Redeem the Franchise by Fixing the Johnny Lawrence Mistake

39 years ago, there was an error in the Karate Kid series, but Karate Kid: Legends now has the ideal chance to rectify past mistakes by introducing a new Johnny Lawrence character. As the sixth film and seventh installment of the extensive Karate Kid franchise, Karate Kid: Legends promises fresh perspectives. Based on available information, the movie will showcase an unprecedented team-up between two iconic senseis from the series, Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han.

In contrast to the typical young characters in the franchise, the film’s lead character, Li Fong, will stand out due to his martial arts background. Guided by Daniel and Mr. Han, he’ll refine his skills, but his extensive knowledge of kung fu from years past will prove equally valuable. By making one key adjustment to the story, Karate Kid: Legends can correct the primary flaw in the original Karate Kid movie and solidify itself as a distinctive sequel within the film series.

Karate Kid: Legends Can Do With Connor What The Original Movies Failed To Do With Johnny

Connor Can Be More Than A One-Off Villain

In the original Karate Kid movie, there was potential to develop Johnny’s character further, but despite efforts made towards the end, he largely stayed in his antagonistic role. The film attempted to elicit empathy from viewers by depicting how Kreese treated Johnny, yet many facets of Johnny’s backstory that could have provided depth remained untold. While Karate Kid: Legends shares several similarities with the original Karate Kid films, it need not follow their footsteps in portraying its villain, Connor.

Instead of making him a single villain in the movie, it would be more interesting to develop him as a morally ambiguous character, similar to Robby or Hawk, as seen in Cobra Kai. In fact, even the original Karate Kid films could have delved into this depth by bringing back Johnny Lawrence in the second film. Unfortunately, he was overlooked until the continuation of his story in Cobra Kai. The upcoming Karate Kid: Legends could introduce Connor as the main antagonist initially. However, subsequent sequels could then show his transformation through a rite of passage, much like Johnny’s, before it’s too late for him to change.

Karate Kid: Legends’ Connor Can Be A More Complex Character Than Karate Kid 1 Johnny

Johnny Remained A One-Dimensional Villain In The First Karate Kid

In the original Karate Kid movie, Johnny was portrayed as the stereotypical ’80s bully who ultimately received his comeuppance. The film attempted to humanize him by revealing his softer side near the end, such as when he handed Daniel the All-Valley trophy and acknowledged that he was “okay.” However, this brief glimpse did not fully convey all the hardships Johnny experienced prior to learning karate and falling under Kreese’s harmful tutelage.

I’m a firm believer that delving deep into anti-hero characters like Hawk and Robby in Cobra Kai adds layers of complexity to their stories, making us understand why they chose paths that may seem morally ambiguous. It was rewarding to see these characters find redemption too. If Karate Kid: Legends follows suit by exploring Connor’s motivations and backstory thoroughly, it could potentially rectify the first Karate Kid’s misunderstanding of Johnny Lawrence and even stand out as one of the stronger additions to the franchise.
