As a lifelong comic book enthusiast, I find myself deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Karl Moline, a true talent whose work graced the pages of numerous beloved comics. His art was not just visually stunning, but it also brought characters to life in ways that resonated with readers like me.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Karl Moline, a beloved comic book artist recognized for his work at CrossGen Comics, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Rogue, and numerous other titles. His fellow CrossGen studio mate, Ron Marz, shared this devastating news on Twitter earlier today. Unfortunately, the cause of Moline’s death and the exact timing remain unknown at present. This heartbreaking news has struck comic book enthusiasts hard, as John Cassaday, renowned artist for Astonishing X-Men and Planetary, passed away earlier in the week. Additionally, James Earl Jones, famously known as the voice of Darth Vader, also passed this week.
In a string of distressing updates, there’s another sad news to report. I recently found out that artist Karl Moline has passed away. He was an amazing person and artist, a fellow studio companion at CrossGen. His departure came far too early, my heartfelt sympathies go out to his family. Ron Marz shared this information on X, along with a black-and-white Rogue artwork by Moline that showcased the talent that enchanted the “Wednesday Warriors” every week as they eagerly awaited the latest comic book release from Moline.
Over the past week, we’ve been inundated with unfortunate news. I regret to inform you that the talented artist Karl Moline has sadly passed away. He was a kind soul and an exceptional artist, sharing the studio space with me at CrossGen. His departure came far too early; my deepest sympathies go out to his family during this difficult time.

A significant portion of Karl Moline’s renowned creations emerged during his collaboration on the spin-off series, “Fray,” jointly created with Joss Whedon. This series, set in a futuristic world, was an evolution of the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” franchise, and featured Melaka Fray as its lead character, a Slayer unlike others, untouched by prophetic dreams that hinted at her destiny. Instead, Fray had to navigate her fate in real-time. Moreover, Moline is recognized among numerous artists who contributed to CrossGen Comics, the publisher whose influence on the comic book industry spanned from the late ’90s through early 2000s. His contributions for CrossGen included issues of “Scion” and “Route 666.
Supporters and contributors are expressing their feelings about Karl Moline’s passing on various social platforms. The Comic Tropes account expressed, “Karl Moline, a talented artist, has sadly passed away. He consistently gave his best work, regardless of the project. His characters were full of emotion, the action was thrilling, and he worked for multiple publishers like Dark Horse, IDW, Crossgen, Valiant, Marvel, leaving an impact everywhere.
Kevin Joseph expressed, “I will always admire @karl_moline for his skill, kindness, and sense of humor. It’s incredibly sad to learn he has passed away. Rest In Peace, Karl. You were truly a royal figure. Unfortunately, I can’t locate the photo of him with my daughter at a convention, so here’s a behind-the-scenes snapshot of one of my favorite pages he created instead.
