Actor Karl Urban recently posted on Instagram a sneak peek from the set of Season 5 of “The Boys,” revealing his return as Billy Butcher. The image shows Urban seated in what seems like an old-fashioned car, with his characteristic facial hair and piercing gaze as Butcher. In the caption, he used the character’s signature phrase: “Oi …I’m on me way.” Filming for this final season began in November 2024, as confirmed by showrunner Eric Kripke, who mentioned that the decision to end with Season 5 was part of his original vision. This planned ending allows the creative team to create a deliberate conclusion for the popular superhero series, contrasting with many shows that face sudden cancellations or hasty conclusions.
In the aftermath of Season 4’s startling finale where Homelander (Antony Starr) seized power in America, Urban’s Butcher encounters his toughest test yet. With just a few months left on his life due to Temp V poisoning and having lost both Ryan (Cameron Crovetti) and command of The Boys, Butcher’s narrative is approaching its end. Throughout Season 4, the character has been tormented by apparitions of Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Joe Kessler, a spectral representation of his guilt and deteriorating mental wellbeing that seems poised to persist into the final season.
I’ve been quite intrigued by the impressive additions to the cast for Season 5 of this show. In September, Hamilton’s Daveed Diggs stepped onto the scene without revealing his character. Meanwhile, Mason Dye from Stranger Things has landed the part of Bombsight, one of the oldest supes in the series. The return of Jensen Ackles as a regular cast member in his role as Soldier Boy is particularly exciting, given his significant ties to Homelander and Butcher’s team, following his brief appearance in Season 4’s post-credits scene. As for Supernatural alum Jared Padalecki, he’s confirmed his involvement in the final season, but we’re still waiting on details about the role he’ll play.
The Boys’ Final Season Is Not the End of the Saga
As the primary storyline comes to an end, the universe of The Boys is growing with various new ventures. The second season of the college-based spinoff Gen V is underway following its strong premiere, and two fresh series are being developed. The Boys: Mexico will delve into uncharted territories under the creative leadership of Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, while Vought Rising will introduce a prequel series featuring Ackles’ Soldier Boy and Aya Cash’s Stormfront in a 1950s setting. Kripke shared with fans at San Diego Comic-Con that the ending would be “massive” and “apocalyptic,” acknowledging the challenge of delivering a satisfying conclusion while promising to wrap things up effectively.
As the series progresses, the expectation to end on a fulfilling note grows stronger since it has continually elevated its narrative standards with each new season. Kripke’s dedication to a predefined finale implies faith in the creative pathway, despite the show dealing with increasingly intricate topics such as authoritarianism, celebrity obsession, and corporate dominance.
In 2026, when The Boys’ fifth season debuts on Amazon Prime Video, it promises a thrilling finale filled with excitement.
