Karl Urban Unleashes Johnny Cage in Fake Movie Poster for Mortal Kombat 2

In the release of the 2021 reboot of the “Mortal Kombat” movie, one of the most frequent criticisms was the absence of Johnny Cage. The character was a standout in the original 1995 film, with Linden Ashby portraying him. Fortunately, this issue will be addressed in “Mortal Kombat 2,” as Johnny Cage will have a significant part. This time, the role of Johnny Cage will be taken by actor Karl Urban, known for his work in “The Boys.” Although we haven’t seen a trailer for “Mortal Kombat 2” yet, Warner Bros. has given fans a sneak peek at Urban as Cage through an unusual means: a mock movie poster!

In the storyline of Mortal Kombat, Johnny Cage is a character who gets dragged into the tournament. This aspect of his persona will remain consistent, as a film poster advertises a fictitious production titled “Uncaged Fury.” The poster showcases an accurate portrayal of Johnny, including sunglasses and a leather jacket, effectively conveying the transformation of an actor to a Kombatant. There’s also a nod to another made-up movie called “Rebel Without a Cage.

In contrast to the first Mortal Kombat movie, Johnny Cage was absent. Yet, it was nearly certain he’d appear in the sequel. The reboot concluded with Cole Young (Lewis Tan) searching for a new warrior to join Raiden’s team, and a poster bearing the name “Johnny Cage” was shown. However, the studio hadn’t yet decided on an actor to portray him, leading to much discussion about who might land the part. Names like The Miz (a professional wrestler) and Ryan Reynolds were thrown around. But it wasn’t until 2023 that Harry Shum Jr.’s role as Johnny Cage in the film was officially announced.

In the role of Johnny Cage, Urban faces a considerable challenge, as fans of Mortal Kombat have long admired Ashby’s portrayal. Although some aspects of the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie may not age well, Ashby’s performance remains a standout. This poster effectively captures the mood, and it will be intriguing to observe the similarities and contrasts between Urban’s interpretation of the character compared to Ashby’s.

The upcoming release of “Mortal Kombat 2” is scheduled for October 24th. This means it’s uncertain when we might catch a glimpse of the first trailer or even a teaser. Warner Bros. may decide to hold off until we get closer, but it seems the anticipation for this movie is already building up. Besides the recently unveiled Johnny Cage poster, all social media platforms associated with the Mortal Kombat film have been refreshed with a stylish new logo for the project.
