Kate Hudson may be watering another love fern soon.
The actress from “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” has expressed her readiness for a sequel of the 2003 movie, as long as everything aligns flawlessly.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express that during my exclusive conversation with Will Marfuggi from TopMob News on Feb 24th, I emphasized that it simply must be absolutely perfect.
However, as Kate outlined the essential aspects she required for participation, her Running Point producer, Mindy Kaling, expressed some reservations.
But when it came to discussing the crucial factors necessary for Kate’s involvement, Mindy Kaling, the Running Point producer, voiced disagreement on these points.
“It can be B minus,” the Office alum quipped during the joint interview. “Just do it.”
Kate, who plays a role in the movie “Running Point” together with Brenda Song, Jay Ellis, and Max Greenfield, seems undecided about reprising her character Andie Anderson. However, she is quite confident about where she believes the character of the how-to journalist would be now.
She’s quite untamed by her very essence,” she elaborated. “But let me assure you, she’s got an exceptional sense of style. Her wardrobe is top-notch, especially when it comes to dresses and Isadora jewels.
And Mindy agreed, adding, “Great outfits, iconic hair.”
In regards to whether the creator of “Never Have I Ever” believes that Kate and Matthew McConaughey’s characters are still a couple, she seems to have some doubts about it.
Gosh,” said Mindy, “I have a feeling that things might not run smoothly between her and Matthew’s characters because they’re both quite wild by nature.” (Don’t miss Kate and Mindy’s interview on TopMob News tonight at 11 p.m.)
Kate has mentioned before that she’s open to a sequel, and in fact, she’s already shared her interest in revisiting the romantic comedy.
In a July 2024 episode of “What What Happens Live,” she expressed her thoughts, as reported by “People”. She mentioned that the studios are usually considering the subject matter, but what truly matters is the script itself. Additionally, she noted that Matthew and herself must be drawn to the script for it to work out.
She added, “We’re both totally open. It has just never happened.”
The series “Running Point” will start streaming on Netflix on February 27th. In the meantime, continue reading to discover fascinating insights about the movie “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days“.
Initially, Gwyneth Paltrow was set to star in a movie with Mike Newell directing. However, due to his unavailability to set a specific date, Paltrow had to depart from the project to film “A View From the Top”. This information was shared by producer Lynda Obst with Entertainment Weekly.
2. Kate Hudson’s breakout role in ‘Almost Famous’, which earned her a Golden Globe, led to her being chosen as Andie Anderson. This happened before Donald Petrie became the director. However, finding her male co-star was not an easy feat; Petrie mentioned to TopMob News that casting Benjamin Barry was the hardest part of the film production.
He clarified that throughout every version of the script, this film essentially belongs to her. Typically, major stars prefer not to play second lead to another actress. That’s just how it is. Kate was involved in the auditions, reading with everyone. It wasn’t just about their acting abilities, but also about their compatibility and willingness to work together. Since this is a lengthy project, they were looking for someone who would give as much as they received. He likened it to a competition or joust.
3. At first, the studio considered another actor for the role, but Hudson and Petrie believed he was too humorous for it. Therefore, during the screen test, Petrie chose three romantic scenes to evaluate the chemistry between the potential leads.
Was it possible for him and Kate to develop a romantic relationship, or was there an attraction between them? This is what he found himself questioning. After everyone watched the results with Paramount, they seemed to suggest, ‘Yes, we can make that happen!’ And our response was, ‘Seriously? It’s just sitting there waiting?’
4. How did Matthew McConaughey eventually secure the role? Hudson reportedly supported him during a studio meeting, even though they were still favoring another actor (whom Petrie chose not to disclose).
Petrie remembered it vividly as Kate had delivered an insightful and emotional argument against the decision, which he found unforgettable. Initially, the studio considered abandoning the project, but Kate stood her ground, saying they would simply move on to something else instead.
Ultimately, when the studio executive inquired about whom Hudson thought should play the role, Petrie disclosed that they dug up their old list of potential actors. Quickly, Kate pointed out Matthew McConaughey, and that decision set the course for what followed.
5. Initially, Petrie had his doubts about choosing McConaughey for the role. “To be honest, I think everyone felt the same way,” he shared, “as McConaughey was a decade older than Jennifer.” This refers to the age difference between the actors in The Wedding Planner.
Additionally, Petrie mentioned a potential issue with casting a native Texan as a fast-paced New York ad exec. To address this, they incorporated into the script that his father served in the Navy, his mother was from the South, and they relocated frequently.
6. On the day following his appointment as a magazine columnist, Hudson followed in the footsteps of Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. As he recounted to Entertainment Weekly (EW), he delved into numerous tips found in Cosmopolitan and Glamour magazines in order to portray Andie authentically; things he usually skips over.
7. The film is adapted from a short cartoon book with the same title, penned by Michelle Alexander and Jeannie Long. Interestingly, the characters portrayed by Kathryn Hahn and Annie Parisse, who are Andie’s coworkers and best friends in the movie, were named after the original authors.
8. Costume designer Karen Patch was behind the creation of the iconic yellow slip dress worn by Andie at the crucial ball, meticulously designing it to accentuate the diamond necklace she dons during that scene. Upon seeing Hudson gracefully emerge in the silky garment, Petrie instantly recognized that the dress would require a significant spotlight moment.
He remembered everyone on set exclaiming, “Wow!” as they saw it. With the back sporting a scoop, he suggested to Kate, “When he first sees you, you need to do a full spin,” which she does at the top of the stairs. That dress is simply magnificent.
He recalled everyone on set saying “Wow!” in amazement. With the back having a scoop, he advised Kate, “When he first sees you, you should make a full turn,” which she did gracefully at the top of the steps. That dress was truly breathtaking.
9. The necklace, known as the “Isadora Diamond,” which features a 80-carat yellow diamond at its core and is named after Isadora Duncan, was crafted by Harry Winston and carries a value of $6 million. Hudson expressed his delight about wearing it to TopMob News, stating, “It was stunning, but also quite nerve-wracking!
10. In an interview with CNN, Patch shared that for Andie’s fashion throughout the film, he opted for a more authentic look by collaborating with multiple designers instead of designing the outfits himself. He ultimately chose designs from Yves Saint Laurent, Prada, Marni, Narciso Rodriguez, and Marc Jacobs to create the stylish character’s wardrobe.
11. Petrie strongly endorsed his actors ad-libbing during scenes, as he enjoys creating surprises and maintaining spontaneity.
He disclosed that he would approach Kate and ask, “‘Can you try to make him do this?'” Similarly, he would speak to Matthew and propose, “‘Can you see if you can get her to do that?'” However, since they are opposites, the tasks assigned to each person seem designed to counteract the other’s actions.
A notable instance is depicted when Andie unexpectedly presented a dog to Benjamin at his workplace. As Petrie recounted, “I was with Kate, and I noticed Matthew admiring himself in a mirror and smoothing his hair. I nudged Kate and suggested, ‘Why don’t you just spontaneously kiss him and dishevel his hair as much as possible?’ And Kate, thrilled by the impromptu scene, had this clandestine excitement.
Instead of reacting negatively to the surprising action, McConaughey decided to roll with it, and I understood that at any moment, I could toss things at these two actors, and they’d simply go along with it, according to Petrie.
12. During Andie’s disruption of Ben’s guys’ night, Hudson improvised numerous lines, such as making McConaughey blow his nose, tossing the platter of vegetables, and noticing their love fern had died. Petrie praised her performance, saying she could have played it more seriously, but instead, she really went all out with it. It’s the small details like these that make it stand out.
13. Regarding the well-known love fern, this plant had a unique part in Petrie’s daughter’s wedding in November 2022. Instead of throwing a bouquet, they carried a love fern, as Petrie humorously stated. It wouldn’t shock me if fern sales increased significantly on Valentine’s Day!
14. After completing her studies at Yale’s acting program, Hahn became the initial choice for a supporting role in the movie.
Alright, that performance set a high standard, let’s find out who else can match it.” Three weeks later, they hadn’t found anyone to surpass Kathryn Hahn and had to start their search again from the beginning.
15. In an interview with EW, Hahn shared insights about the casting process, discussing her final audition alongside Hudson, which was observed by Petrie and the studio. She admitted that she was extremely anxious during their initial encounter, recalling how she attempted to lighten the mood by making a joke about our shared memories of a racy theater camp we attended as children, a memory from our past experiences at the Bad Moms set.
16. Following that uncomfortable opening, Hahn’s phone unexpectedly rang during their rehearsal. “That was the absolute last thing I needed,” she reminisced. “I picked it up and incorporated it into the scene, but then I had to act as if it wasn’t repeatedly vibrating while my friend Patrick persistently called. He essentially asked me what on earth was happening, thinking I might have gone mad.
17. McConaughey stole the show with a specific element from the film. In an interview with TopMob News, he shared, “I got a motorcycle because of this script.” He desired to feel authentic…since he’s noticed that in many movies, actors don’t truly ride horses or motorcycles. Instead, they just pretend.
18. Despite varying opinions about the film from critics, Petrie chose to disregard the reviews, particularly following the preview screening of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
He clarified that in his field, an average is typically around 55%. However, he confidently stated that their result was exceptionally high at 94%. Though the romantic comedy attracted a wide range of women (as evidenced by its 99 rating from female viewers), it was the male response that truly stood out to him as unusual, Petrie mentioned.
He went on to say, “The overall rating from men of various ages was 89, resulting in an average of 94. One aspect I particularly enjoy about this film’s success is that it seems to be a perfect ‘guy’s chick flick’.
19. Five years following the release of “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”, Hudson and McConaughey collaborated again on another romantic comedy titled “Fool’s Gold”. However, Petrie hinted that fans should always keep an open mind about the possibility of a sequel, saying, “Why, who knows?
Indeed, by 2019 reports indicated that a TV version of this show was being developed at Quibi. Unfortunately, just seven months following its launch in April 2020, the mobile-centric streaming service ceased operations.
