At present, only one Star Wars movie, “The Mandalorian & Grogu” slated for 2026, has a confirmed release date. However, Lucasfilm is actively working on several other movies that fans are eager to learn more about. Notable directors like James Mangold and Taika Waititi are involved in these projects, and Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, has provided updates on both. In an extensive interview with Deadline, she discussed the progress of both films, revealing that they’re still in the script-writing phase. Due to his work on the Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown”, Mangold’s Star Wars film was put on hold, and it seems Waititi’s busy schedule is delaying his Star Wars project.
Kennedy mentioned that Mangold is currently working on his script, referring to the film. There has been a slight delay due to the Dylan movie and award season. It’s necessary to make accommodations for top talent, as quality plays such a crucial role in their Star Wars project. Kennedy prefers to wait for people who are both passionate and exceptionally skilled to join the Star Wars team.
Kennedy’s remarks about Waititi’s movie weren’t exactly clear-cut. She commented, “I’m still waiting for Taika, and he’s working with another writer right now. He’s quite busy. I adore him. If we ever receive a script from Taika, it will undoubtedly be amazing. I’ve already seen an opening act that I loved, but keeping him committed is challenging.
As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the news about Taika Waititi’s movie since May 2020, while Mangold’s project, rumored to be called Dawn of the Jedi, was first announced at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023. Details on both films are being tightly guarded, but it’s clear that Mangold’s film will delve into the early days of the Jedi Order, taking us thousands of years before the Skywalker saga’s timeframe.
Two movie directors have recently shared their thoughts on their respective Star Wars ventures. In January, Mangold expressed his excitement to delve into an uncharted period of the series timeline, which allows him to narrate a story that he finds most intriguing without being constrained by past releases. The idea of Dawn of the Jedi was appealing because it doesn’t require adherence to all previous installments. Meanwhile, Waititi gave an ambiguous update in November, stating that the project isn’t completely off the table as it may regain priority for him at a later time.
Kennedy’s remarks about Waititi’s Star Wars movie are as puzzling as Waititi’s comments made months ago. The part of Kennedy’s quote suggesting they might receive a script from Waititi hints that the film is not yet confirmed, despite being officially announced nearly five years back. It’s slightly reassuring to know that Waititi has a first act planned, but it seems the movie isn’t close to production just yet. This mirrors the frustrations of fans who have seen many Star Wars projects announced and then abandoned over the years. With Waititi busy with post-production on Klara and the Sun and other non-Star Wars films ahead, it’s uncertain when or if his Star Wars movie will actually take flight.
The latest news regarding Mangold’s film has become clearer to understand. This year, “A Complete Unknown” was a significant figure on the awards circuit, earning eight Oscar nominations. With so much time spent on making and marketing that movie, Mangold is now free to focus on Star Wars projects. Besides working on Star Wars, Mangold is also developing “Swamp Thing” for the DC Universe. We’ll have to wait and see which of these projects gets released first. Fingers crossed for more definite information about “Dawn of the Jedi” at this year’s Star Wars Celebration in Japan.
