Kathryn Apanowicz, EastEnders and Corrie star, dies aged 64

Actress and broadcaster Kathryn Apanowicz has died at the age of 64, it has been confirmed.

As a cinephile, I’m saddened to share that Karl Apanowicz, once a beloved figure on the set alongside the iconic Richard Whiteley of Countdown fame, took his final bow on March 3rd, following a prolonged battle with illness.

Her friend and ex-ITV journalist, Christa Ackroyd, announced her passing on Facebook.

At a tender age, Apanowicz kicked off her acting journey, appearing on Yorkshire Television’s Junior Show Time and in the movie titled Bugsy Malone.

Later on, she became a prominent figure in the BBC series titled Angels, portraying the character Nurse Rose Butchins. Additionally, she made appearances in various soap operas, one of them being EastEnders, where she played Magda Czajkowski, a caterer who had a relationship with the iconic character Den Watts (Leslie Grantham).

She also had minor roles in Emmerdale and Coronation Street.

Later on in her career, Apanowicz presented on BBC Radio Leeds and BBC Radio York.

From 1994 up to his passing in 2005 at the age of 61 due to heart complications, Apanowicz and Whiteley were in a relationship. Following his demise, Apanowicz published a novel called “Richard by Kathryn: The Life of Richard Whiteley,” which was about their shared life together.

Many heartfelt tributes have poured in after the news of the passing of the actress, Kathryn Apanowicz. Ian White from ITV Calendar expressed his sorrow on social media by saying: “I’m deeply saddened to learn about my friend and former colleague, Kathryn Apanowicz.

In another post, he expressed: “The outpouring of reactions after learning that our dear friend Kathryn Apanowicz passed away at the age of 64 has been immense. We appreciate all the heartfelt messages. Kathryn was a bundle of laughter and optimism, making her a delight to be around. She always brought good spirits! Her absence will undoubtedly be felt deeply.

Carole Vorderman, the broadcaster, expressed her sympathies, posting on Twitter: “Sadly, Kathy passed away yesterday. She was Richard Whiteley’s devoted partner, by his side when he passed away 20 years ago.

She added: “Now, she’ll reunite with him, standing by his side once more, a place where her heart found its greatest joy. Farewell, my friend.
